SONDAGE
.
souterrain
[MC].
A long narrow stone-walled subterranean gallery, usually with a slab roof, found in western parts of Britain and Brittany, and dating from the Iron Age through to the early Christian period. In Cornwall they are called ‘fogous’. Some have small chambers off the main passage. A few examples are known below apparently contemporary houses and in a few cases seem to extend below the boundary features of surrounding enclosures. Interpretations vary, some authorities preferring to see them as cold storage places, some as refuges in times of trouble, and still others as underground cult places.
