French antiquarian responsible for excavations at Palaeolithic and Mesolithic sites in southwest France through the 1880s and 1890s. Excavations at Mas d'Azil in 1887 allowed the definition of the
AZILIAN
culture which bridged the gap between the local Palaeolithic and Mesolithic phases. He proposed subdividing the French Palaeolithic into the Amygdalithic, Niphetic, and Glyptic phases, but the scheme was never widely used. He was also one of the first scholars to support the authenticity and antiquity of the cave art at
