Insert the tapestry needle through the next stitch purlwise and leave it on the needle.

On the back needle, insert the tapestry needle through the first stitch purlwise and slip the stitch off the needle.

Insert the tapestry needle through the next stitch knit-wise and leave the stitch on the needle.

Repeat steps 4–7 until all stitches have been worked. You will have 1 stitch left on the back needle; go through with the thread purlwise and weave the end in.

Sewn Bind Off

The Sewn Bind Off
was a favorite of Elizabeth Zimmermann. It forms a very elastic edging that is useful for edges that are subjected to stretching, such as necklines and cuffs. In appearance it forms a ridge much like a purl row.

Working the Bind Off

Measure out a tail of yarn that is three times the width of the knitting to be bound off. Thread this onto a blunt tapestry needle. Work from right to left with the right side facing you.

Insert the tapestry needle purlwise through the first 2 stitches on the needle and pull the yarn through. Leave the stitches on the needle.

Insert the tapestry needle knitwise through the first stitch on the needle and drop this stitch off the needle.
