“Do we really have
to go?” Leah asked, watching him packing their suitcases. “I’m not due for another week.”

Adam let out a sigh. “Don’t tell me that you’re still worried I’m not bringing you back.”

“I’m not.” She waddled over to him and laid her head against his back, winding her arms around his waist as much as her belly would let her. “I just want to stay home.”

He turned around and kissed her forehead. “I know, baby. But I’m not relenting any further on this. If I had my way we would have been there already.”

“It’s a scheduled C-section, Adam.”

He laughed and laid his hands on her belly. “If you don’t go into labor before that. I’m not risking that, not a chance.”

She frowned at him.

“Don’t give me that look.” He kissed her pouting lips. “You know it could happen. Especially since you’ve been convincing me to fuck you every day for the last two weeks. That’s an old midwives’ trick to bring on labor you know.”

“I know.” She knew he was right.

“It’s a beautiful house, baby. And we’ll be back before you know it.”

And he was right again. She actually did go into labor two days later and she was glad they were so close to the hospital. Adam was too worried to give her an I-told-you-so lecture while she was being rushed into the operating room. The last thing she saw before she went under was the frightened look on his face.

Within a week, she was back on the deck, watching the sun sink behind the trees while curled up on Adam’s lap with their son curled up on hers, studying the way the aquamarine on her finger matched the baby blue of his eyes. They named him Samuel and as soon as his Daddy knew that his Mommy was going to make a full recovery, Leah watched the last of the sorrow evaporate from her future husband’s eyes. They were whole now, and she knew that he would stay with her forever every time his lips found hers in the dark.
