It was so obvious to her now and so horrifying.

Because Zak and she lived in completely different worlds, they always had. They collided only briefly, but it was never going to be enough, she was never going to fit, and there was not a damn thing she could do about it.

Chapter Sixteen

“That’s bullshit,” Zak spat the words out, his heart thudding as he faced Freya across the room. She stood there, wrapped in his shirt, the scent of sex on her, and told him it wasn’t going to fucking work?

How dare she?

How could she run from him again?

“I want you,” he roared. “Why can’t you see that? Why can’t you accept what’s between us? What’s
always
been between us?”

She shook her head and took a step back towards the door. Her hands were clenched tight, her face drawn. Why? He couldn’t work it out. They’d shared the most amazing experience. He hadn’t scared her with his dark desires—she’d liked it!

“You don’t see it,” she said, taking another step back. “To you, our two worlds fit because you’re Zak the almighty, no one tells you what to do, no one stands in your way, but it’s not like that for me. I’m on the outside looking in, and I can see it, us, for exactly what it is.”

He ran a hand through his hair, unable to shake the confusion. Unable to accept that what he most feared was coming to pass. “What?” he demanded. “What is
it
?”

She drew in a shuddery breath. “A mistake.”

The words were like a spear straight to Zak’s heart. If it hadn’t sounded like something out of a fucking romance novel, he’d have said he actually felt the thing crack. “Don’t you fucking dare call it that!” he snapped. “Don’t.”

And another step back, her hand reaching around so that she gripped the door handle. “Zak,” she whispered. “You moved on a long time ago with your life, but I never did. We went in two opposite directions. This was just...I don’t know…those two points converging for a moment before they change direction forever.”

“That doesn’t even make sense.”

“It does,” she insisted. “It makes perfect sense and because of it, I can’t be your friend anymore, Zak. Not after this. Things will never be the same between us.”

And you’ll lose her anyway
. The words echoed through his mind making his stomach clench. His worst fear come to life. “I don’t want them to be the same,” he grated. “I want them to be different. I want more, Freya. I
always
wanted more.”

“No, Zak, you want your best friend to be your lover too. You want it all wrapped up in a nice little bow, but I’m not neat.”

“You are. You’re perfect.”

“For God’s sake, Zak, will you look at me properly for once. I work a shitty job. I have little to no prospects. I live in the coldest apartment in Boston and can’t even afford to fucking heat it. You’re a millionaire businessman who can get any woman he wants.”

“I want you.”

“No,” she cried. “You think you do because we’ve been friends for so long. We care about each other so much you’re confusing it. But that won’t last, Zak. You’ll wake up one day and see me properly and then what?”

He couldn’t work out what she meant. He had always seen her properly. “How can you say that? How can you even think it?”

“It’s what I know. We held on to each other for too long.” A pause and then, “We should have let go years back. It was my fault. I wanted to keep you, and I didn’t even realize why.”

“What are you saying?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

“It’s never mattered more.”

“I would just be holding you back, Zak,” she said. “The old friend who never moved on. This between us would never work. Never.”

“You’re wrong.”

“No, I’m right. Painfully right and you know it too.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

He felt like he was banging his head against a brick wall, but Zak could not stop. “Don’t do this, Freya,” he pleaded. “Don’t fucking do this. Not now, not when we’ve finally reached this point.”

“It has to be now. Before it goes too far.”

“It’s already gone too fucking far!” he roared. “Don’t you see that? Years I have wanted this. Wanted you. I’ve ached. Sat next to you, dick hard, wanting to pick you up and fuck you until you realized! Wanting to kiss you until you whispered my fucking name!”

His words fell like a bomb between them. Her eyes widened, her throat worked as she swallowed repeatedly. “Zak…”

And it was hearing his name fall from her lips, just like it had when he’d fucked orgasm after orgasm from her that finally snapped Zak’s patience. What the hell was he doing pleading with her? Acting, just like his friends had said, like some sort of pussy. Freya would run because she
constantly
ran, there was only one way to stop her. He strode across the room, face set, and pulled her into his arms. She struggled slightly, trying to push him aside, but he held fast.

“Enough,” he growled. “Enough.”

“Don’t…”

He silenced her protest with a kiss. And it was not a gentle kiss it gave no concessions to her fears and insecurities. He practically shook with emotion.
Tension swirled around them, the room beating with it. Zak put it all into the kiss. He ravaged her lips, took everything she had to give, and then took some more.

By the time he pulled back they were both panting.

“You are mine,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what you say. It doesn’t matter what you think. You have
always
been mine.”

She opened her mouth, gasped, shook her head. Zak responded by bunching his shirt around her hips. A moment later he released the zipper on his pants, pushed her against the door and impaled her on his cock.

She cried out—maybe in shock, maybe in pleasure. He ignored it. She was wet already, her nipples poking through the shirt fabric. Zak wanted to bend and suck them into his mouth, but this was not going to be a gentle fucking, no time to play nice.

He drove into her with little finesse. Head spinning from the feel of her wetness, the heat of her pussy. In and out he moved, and she responded by wrapping her arms around his neck and lifting her legs to his waist.

Zak cupped his hands under her ass and moved her back and forth so that her clit rubbed against his length. She felt so fucking good! No way was he ever letting this go. No way!

“Zak,” she moaned. “Zak.”

“Yes. Zak,” he grated. “It’s my cock inside of you.
Me
pulling the orgasms from you.
Me
pleasuring you. Deny it all you fucking want, Sparks, but this is right. This is how it’s supposed to be.”

“Oh God…”

Her head fell into the crook of his shoulder. Zak continued to pound his cock in and out. His knees felt shaky, his legs weak, but it was not from her weight it was from the orgasm that was already building inside.

“You need to come,” he growled. “Come for me.”

“I can’t,” she moaned. “I can’t…”

He pulled her around and stalked across the room, throwing her on the bed in one quick move. She spread her legs, and Zak knew she expected him to simply settle between them and fuck her some more, and God was he tempted. Burying himself deep inside Freya was fast becoming his favorite pastime. But, no, she had to realize that this relationship of theirs was going to be as equal as he could make it.

He gave her a light spank on the ass and fell next to on the bed, arms spread. “Take what you need. Take it all. It’s yours.”

Freya did not hesitate before climbing on top of him and straddling his dick. She took it inside of her without so much of a pause. Zak could only look up in awe to see the woman he ached for riding his cock.

Her breasts swung underneath his shirt, her hands planted on his chest, with her head thrown back. She rode him hard, moaning his name, moaning how much she loved it.

Satisfaction screamed through Zak. His dick throbbed inside her. His balls tightened.  He was so close.

Freya leaned forward; ceasing her rhythm, building the tension to breaking point, and making him grit his teeth. She peppered kisses along his jaw, on his forehead, along his lips. Her honey hair brushed against his chest, he could feel her breasts so close. Zak reached out to palm them, but Freya took his hands and lifted them above his head so that his body was stretched out.

“I want them,” he hissed.

“Turnabout is fair play, right, Zak?”

Her words didn’t make sense at first, but then she leaned even further forward, his cock almost slipping from her and moment later Zak realized
exactly
what she was doing.

“Freya…don’t you fucking dare!”

“Too late,” she whispered.

“You…” He tugged on the rope, unbelieving that she had managed to restrain him so quickly.

“You taught me how to do that knot when we were fifteen,” she sighed. “Remember?”

“Undo it.”

“You told me to take what I wanted, Zak. I’m going to take it all.”

She kissed him then, allowed him to capture her lips. Zak tensed against the rope bonds, knowing that if he flexed just right he could get free. He may have taught Freya the knot, but she had never mastered it.

She kissed him again. Zak groaned against her lips and let his hands relax, because she’d sheathed him once more. He was seated deep inside her, and she kept him there, exactly as she wanted him, riding him with fast little strokes at the same time that she kissed him.

She panted against his lips, he kissed each breath away. A moment later and she came, drenching him with her orgasm. Zak followed a mere second after, pumping her full of his come. His dick pulsed, waves of ecstasy spread through his body. It was perfection, better even than the night before when he’d had her in every position he could possibly think of.

“Zak…”

His name upon her lips, her thighs holding him tight, her perfect breasts brushing against his body…
like heaven.

“You took me by surprise,” he whispered.

“Turnabout.”

“Yes.”

“I love…” she began. Zak’s heart gave a little leap.

“What?”

She buried her head in his shoulder so that her voice muffled, he could only just hear the words. “I love how you feel inside me,” she continued. “I never realized.”

“But you do now?”

“Yes,” she said. “But I—”

She paused. Zak tensed. “What?”

“I don’t know how to feel,” she said slowly. “I’m so confused. This is…”

“Unexpected,” he said.

“I’m so scared.”

The words were drawn from her, Freya vulnerable, open up to him. It made his heart ache, and he longed to comfort her, to make it all better. In one quick move he twisted his wrists and freed them from the bonds. He sat up, pulling Freya up with him, cradling her in his arms.

“You don’t need to be,” he reassured. “Let me look after you. I’ve wanted to for so long.”

He meant the words to be comforting, to reassure her, but Zak knew the moment they left his lips that they were the wrong thing to say. Freya lifted herself away from him, shaking her head, eyes scrunched shut.

“I don’t need looking after.”

“Everyone needs looking after.”

She pushed at his arms. “Do you, Zak?”

“Yes,” he said honestly. “By you.”

The pushing ceased, like the air had deflated out of her, and she curled back up against him. “Oh, Zak,” she breathed. “I’ve never been any good at looking after anyone but myself, and I am not sure I will be with you. The differences in our lives…the gap…I just don’t know…”

“Frey—”

She looked at him with tortured eyes. How he hated to see his own pain reflected there, and yet there was no going back now. Everything had reached a head. “I don’t even know if I can bridge it,” she whispered. “You’re Zak, my Zak, and yet you’re not him. I can’t put the two together in my mind.”

“Can’t or won’t?” he asked.

“Can’t. But Zak…” A pause and then, “I want to. I really do. I’m just so confused.”

It was then, with those words, that Zak realized how far Freya still had to come. He’d understood his feelings for her for what felt like forever, had waited for this moment, practically turning into a wreck, but she’d had a few days to process their new relationship—maybe not even that much. She was
still
processing.

He could keep her in the club, make love to her over and over, drive them both mindless with pleasure, but it wouldn’t make any difference. He couldn’t force this on her. It was in her hands now.

He had to give her time.

Space.

Only then would he know. Only then would
she
.

“Then you need time,” he said slowly, decision reached.

“But—”

“And I’m going to give it to you,” he added. “Time to think. Time to understand what we have here. I can’t push you into this. It will be meaningless if I do.”

“But I thought…I thought you were going to…”

“Make you?” he asked. “Force you into doing what I want? Take responsibility for the decision.”

She ducked her head. “Yes.”
