THE END
Author's note regarding fingerprints
When I was in England in the summer of 1992, I sat in on a trial at the Old Bailey. An 80-year-old woman had been murdered, and a Scotland Yard detective was testifying. All the fingerprints in the woman's apartment were of the woman's caretaker, who was charged with the murder. When the judge asked why no prints of the victim were found, the detective replied, as if it were something “every schoolboy knows,” that people over 65 don't leave fingerprints! I had never seen that piece of information anywhere. In the summer of 1994 I taught at a writer's workshop at the University of Georgia, and took the opportunity to attend other sessions presented by forensics experts for people interested in writing mysteries. I asked, and was told yes, it's true. Ever since, I've been looking for the right place to use this piece of information.
