By Jo Henley
Liz’s second chance romance with Oscar began months prior to her stepping foot in the Buckeye Bar. She was in a loveless marriage and hurtling full speed toward divorce papers. A day at her parent’s house with her entire family proved too much for her self-absorbed husband, Chris. At the end of the evening he choose to wait in the car with the engine running. Before Liz could finish her goodbyes and join him, a sexy stranger inadvertently inserted himself into her life.
A red truck drove slowly, waiting for the minivan to pass. It inched in front of my field of vision and stopped at the house across the street. I locked eyes with the driver of the pickup.
He leaned an elbow out and turned back over his shoulder to me. A smile crept across his face. I mindlessly walked toward the unintentionally seductive smile of the driver. My toes inching off the curb, I shifted toward the man in the truck.
“Thanks for the ride,” Bill, my friend since high school said from his yard across the street. “Oh hey, Liz,” Bill said in my direction before opening the passenger door of the pickup and hopping in the cab.
He must have waved bye, but I didn’t see it. All I saw was the polite head nod in my direction from the driver. An invitation? My heart jumped with excitement and I stepped off into the street, hoping to be introduced.
“Get in the car!” Chris yelled, laying heavy on the horn.
My gaze ripped back to reality and to my husband, throwing his hands up in disgust.
The stranger in the red truck stepped on the gas and drove away, taking with him the fantasy that a sexy, good ol’ boy type of man could exist in my life.
Liz’s glimpse of Oscar consisted of seconds, but his impression stayed in her thoughts long after that fateful evening. She fantasized all summer about the kind of man who would remind her how love was supposed to feel.
