She also recalled: “Mr. Veeck was well loved by the black community in St. Louis. He was very active with black people; he brought baseball to the streets. He knew that black athletes were not treated fairly. I always thought if any owner were to hire a black manager, it would be him. That's just the way he was. He was innovative and fair. Indeed, baseball history would be entirely different had Mr. Veeck named Elston as major-league baseball's first black manager.”
