Karen stepped toward him and looked closely at his left shoulder. The shirt was soaked with blood around it. “She’s not the only one who needs help. Looks like you’ve lost a lot of blood, too, Abe.”
He nodded. “There’s a hospital in Eureka. I’m acquainted with a couple of people in the ER. We need to get her there as soon as possible.”
Gavin nodded and pushed away from the SUV. “All right, we’ll do that. We want to get out of here before the authorities start showing up, anyway.” He walked over to Bob and stood silently at his side for a moment. “You want to come with us, Bob?”
He did not respond for a moment. His eyes did not leave the fire as he said in a weak, trembling voice, “Sure. I’ve got nowhere else to go.”
Gavin watched Bob’s face for a moment, tinged by the orange glow of the fire across the street. “Bob... you’re smiling.”
Bob’s smile grew a little wider as he nodded, his eyes still on the burning church. “Yeah. I’m smiling.”
