As Mikey stepped from the door, his head was smashed from one side to the other. The poor lad didn’t stand a chance. This was Davo’s time now and he was wasting Mikey Milne, hammering him. Mark waited until Mikey was floored. This bastard had set him up, what a dirty lowlife fucker he was. He’d double-crossed him. Davo stood over his victim and turned his eyes back to Mark. “I’m ready to finish him, just say the word.” Mark’s nostrils flared. He tickled the end of his chin and held his head back. He nodded slowly. Mikey would never come back from this, his skull was shattered and his breathing had stopped completely. Mark walked over to the prisoner and looked into his shallow eyes. “Did you think I would ever let you get one over on me you fucking rat? You had to go. Nobody blackmails me and gets away with it.” The final fatal blow was struck. Mark rushed Davo back to the wing. All evidence of them being there was covered up. Shit happened inside prisons every day and after what would likely be a long investigation, the prison would still be none the wiser as to what had happened here. Mikey Milne was dead, that was all that mattered. His body lay in a pool of blood, his mouth still wide open.

Sarah shoved the rest of the money inside the envelope. She looked at the letter she’d composed and knew she was doing the right thing. She should never have taken the money from Rachel’s home but she didn’t trust his mother. She was just looking after it for Mikey and the life they’d planned when he was a free man. Ten thousand pounds was a lot of money and they could have used it as a deposit on their first home. The envelope was sealed and addressed to Mikey Milne at his mother’s home address. Life had been hard for Sarah over these last few months and it was only now that she was starting to see through the other side of her heartbreak. Life was cruel and in the future she would never give her heart away with haste. Sarah wanted to concentrate on her career now and make everyone proud of her. She sat staring at the envelope and shook her head. This was the end of an era, a lesson learned. She would never be so foolish with matters of the heart again.

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Mark sat in the canteen with Smithy having a mid-morning break. They were laughing and joking, unaware of people coming into the room at the side of them. The police were all over and they were heading straight for Mark’s table. Smithy removed himself from the situation as the officer read Mark his rights. They’d arrested him for murder, conspiracy to murder and a lot of other charges. Dennis Milne had now given a full statement with everything he knew about his son’s murder. He had witnessed the gruesome attack from his hospital bed. Once Mikey had closed the door he tried to run after him but it was too late, the bastards had already got to him. Dennis held his son in his arms that night and it broke his heart. He owed his son so much and putting Mark and Davo away was all he could do. He would never get over this. Smithy was backing Dennis. Mark was his friend but his own morals would never ever allow innocent people to get killed. He wore his uniform with pride and he couldn’t have slept at night knowing he’d been aware of exactly what had gone on within the prison walls.

Mark stood up trying to declare his innocence but nobody was listening. The police had all they needed to put him behind bars for a long time. This was the walk of shame. His colleagues looked on in disgust as he was dragged from his workplace. Even now, with everything against him, he was still lying through his teeth. “I didn’t do anything wrong. I swear this is mistaken identity. I’ve been stitched up. Get my fucking solicitor. Heads are going to roll for this, just you watch.” Smithy walked out of the room and held his head high. His conscience was clear now and no matter what, he would sleep every night with a clear head.

Smithy sat on B-Wing and there wasn’t a peep to be heard. Mikey Milne was going to be missed for sure. Potter was devastated and somewhere in his heart, he would always remember the man who had shown him a different way of life. He would never be the same man again. Mikey had taught him to face his fears, to laugh in the face of danger and to never think he was an underdog. His memory would live on B-Wing forever.

RIP Mikey Milne.
