We drove up to the base lodge of Snow Summit, which was a sort of adventure park with a zip line when there was no snow. It did make snow, but the conditions had to be right and, as it was explained to me, about half the year, Sugarloaf Mountain is too dry to make snow. Why any sane person would want to slide down a zip line’s thin wire between two trees was a mystery to me, but there seemed to be a lot of people who didn’t share my hesitancy.

In any case, we took the chair lift to the top. At the top, there was a table, with a bottle of champagne, a glass and a chair. Peter sat me down in the chair, opened the champagne and carefully poured the flute nearly full. As he handed it me, he put his finger across my lips, so I wouldn’t ask any questions. My smile had to be lit up.

He remembered.

“A year ago, today, right on this very mountain, I had this gorgeous creature order me to fall in love with her. She was an intriguing, bewitching creature who enchanted everyone she met. Including me. Over the course of the year, most of the world also came to recognize that she was beautiful and wonderful and magical. I just followed orders and every day learned to love her just a little bit more.”

He opened a ring box and put it on the table in front of me. The diamonds winked at me. I picked up the ring and put it on with trembling hands.

“Is this how the billionaire proposes?”

“It is,” he said.
