Authorities believe nine rounds were fired. Several hit the walls of the first family’s living quarters, and at least one bullet flew across a balcony, often used by the Obamas to relax, and broke the outer window, but it was stopped by an inner layer of ballistic glass.

Witnesses saw Ortega speed off, but only a few blocks away his car came to a stop on the lawn of the US Institute of Peace. After briefly trying to restart the car, he was seen abandoning it and fleeing the scene on foot.

When investigators searched the car, they found the assault rifle, three clips of ammunition, brass knuckles, an aluminum baseball bat, and the hooded jacket in which police had photographed Ortega earlier that day.

A photo of the suspect was issued to law enforcement, and five days later Ortega was arrested without incident in the lobby of a hotel in western Pennsylvania. He was charged with attempted assassination, and his trial was scheduled for fall 2013.

The president and First Lady Michelle Obama were en route to Hawaii at the time of the shooting. The Secret Service has not commented on whether the Obamas’ daughters, Sasha and Malia, were at the White House during the incident.
