At first, Dominick kept his distance, determined to mind his own business. He was cool with a small crew of people, but he didn’t consider anyone a friend in this concrete jungle of steel bars and hopeless dreams, and that’s the way he wanted to keep it. He didn’t stick his nose in anything that didn’t concern him and turned the other way when he saw the animalistic atrocities committed in prison. He was here to do his three year bid then get the fuck out.
But something about the kid, who introduced himself as Tech, made him bend his own self-imposed rules. Tech explained to Dominick that he got his nickname because of his knowledge of computers and other electronic gadgets. Tech could build a computer with one hand tied behind his back and had the ability to hack into the most difficult, secured networks out there. That’s how he’d gotten mixed up in the murder of an off duty cop.
Dom didn’t know why he took him under his wing. Maybe it had something to do with Tech’s age. He was the same age Dominick had been when he was locked up. The difference was, Angel had arranged for him to be sent to a cushy facility which housed juveniles under the age of eighteen. Otherwise, he could’ve easily been in Tech’s position. The Feds had been gunning for a twenty-five to life sentence. Same as Tech, he hadn’t been guilty either, but Dom knew the justice system didn’t give a lovely fuck whether a person was innocent or guilty. As long as they had someone…anyone… doing the time, they slept damned well at night.
Now, Dominick remained undaunted as Garcia continued to shoot visual bullets aimed directly at him. He wasn’t intimidated the way most of the prisoners were by him,
just the opposite. Julio Garcia was of average height, but thick with bulky muscles. Tattoos covered every inch of exposed skin. He even had tats covering his shaved head. He wore a full mustache which trailed down to thinly outline his mouth then came together in a neatly trimmed goatee. Garcia almost never smiled. He was an imposing figure, no doubt, and was doing life for murder. He’d been in prison for six years. How he’d managed to get into a minimum security prison was anyone’s guess.
Prison gangs were as prevalent as country club memberships. Garcia was the leader of the infamous Ñetas gang and ruled with an iron fist. They were known for their viciousness and violence and maintained strict power and control over other inmates who weren’t protected or were seen as weak. Assaults and murders of inmates were an everyday occurrence and about a third of them were carried out on Garcia’s say so.
Dominick was well aware of the Ñetas' ruthless reputation. On the outside, there had been several run-ins between the Ñetas and Angel, but there was a tenuous truce between the two operations at the moment. Everyone answered to someone. Even Garcia. As much as he hated Dominick, he’d been ordered to stand down and keep his distance.
Since that was the case, Garcia had found another way to fuck with Dominick. Through Tech. And now Tech was dead. Until now, Dominick had flown under the radar, but all that was about to change. He was on a mission to destroy Garcia and knew just how he was going to do it.
Anyone who thought prison walls blocked the sale of illegal drugs on the inside was naïve or just plain stupid. Drug use ran rampant and the selling of drugs was a very profitable business. Drug fiends weren’t limited to just inmates. CO’s and other prison officials were some of the pusher's most frequent customers. Despite the efforts of frustrated investigators, inmate ingenuity, complicit visitors, and corrupt staff contributed to the illegal rise of drug profits.
And that’s where Dominick would strike to hurt Garcia. Fucking with his drug money was only the beginning. Before he was finished, he would crush Garcia as surely as if he were a bug beneath the sole of his shoe.
Sitting opposite Dominick, Chino had been talking in code, informing Dom of when and how the next shipment would get to him. At first, Angel hadn't wanted to supply Dom with the drugs, but when Dom persisted and threatened to get a connection elsewhere, Angel relented.
Chino noticed Dominick’s attention fixated on something behind him. Turning around, he searched the room until his eyes came to a screeching halt. Chino leaned back in the chair and sent Dom a look of warning. “Damn, bruh. You must got a death wish or somethin’ eyein’ Garcia’s bitch like that.”
Before Dominick could answer, everyone's attention was riveted to the scene unfolding in front them as Garcia lurched over the table and got in Isabella’s face. Although there was a strict policy against any physical contact between prisoners and visitors, Garcia reached out and curled his fingers around her forearm in a grip so painful, she winced as tears flooded her eyes.
The guards probably would’ve overlooked the entire interaction if Garcia hadn’t reared back and slapped the shit out of her before grabbing a handful of her hair. Hell, they couldn’t very well just stand there while a prisoner assaulted a visitor. Garcia was getting ready to smack her again when two COs ran over and pulled him back. He struggled against their hold, but they forcibly pushed him towards the exit.
As they passed Dominick’s table, Dom mockingly lifted his chin in greeting. “Wassup, ese? Que Pasa…?”
Garcia slowed down then came to a stop when he heard Dominick’s taunt. “You just made a big mistake, homes.” The warning was said in a smooth, heavily accented voice. “You just fucked up. Believe dat.”
Chino’s eyes went from Garcia to Dominick, and when Dominick unfolded his long frame from the chair and stared Garcia in the eye, Chino sank down in his chair and bit back a muffled curse.
“Nah. I think you got that backwards, homes.”
Garcia raised his chin and narrowed his eyes until they were thin slits as he studied Dominick. The tension had been thick between them since Tech’s suicide, but this was the first time they’d actually exchanged words. Garcia's sudden laughter was loud and meant to provoke. He leaned towards Dominick as far as the COs grasp would allow.
“Oooh, I see. All this ‘cause I fucked your lil boyfriend?” Garcia’s amusement increased when he saw the quick anger leap onto Dominick’s face. “Is that what dis is all about? Because I busted his cherry?” Garcia shook his head and sighed in remembrance then lowered his voice. “He loved it, homes. He loved dat shit. I made him scream it over, and over, and over again. Had him calling me papi by the time I was finished.” Garcia laughed again and blew Dominick a kiss.
Rage tensed his body as he prepared to fuck Garcia up right where he stood, but with self-control he’d nurtured and practiced over the years, he remained outwardly calm and glanced at Isabella. Seeing her standing there watching them with her palm pressed against a fire engine red cheek, Dominick brought his attention back to Garcia.
“Turnabout’s fair play, wouldn’t you say, muh man? Before I finish, that sexy bitch of yours gon' be screaming out that I’m her papi while I’m beatin’ that sweet pussy up and writing my name in it with long, cursive strokes.” Dominick winked and stepped back. “Think about that while you mark them days off in the hole.”
A deadly expression came over Garcia's face. Seconds before he threw himself at Dominick, the guards grabbed him and dragged him kicking and screaming out the room. Dominick’s eyes met those of two of his boys and they all nodded. Things had been set in motion. There was no turning back.
Chino sighed and scratched his head in agitation. “Dom, fuck! Why you do that, man? What happened to ole boy ain’t got nuthin’ to do witchu, bruh. Damn!”
Chino knew he had no choice but to report the incident he’d just witnessed to Oscar. Yeah, Garcia might be thrown into solitary confinement for thirty days, but that wouldn’t stop chaos from erupting between his people and Dom. News traveled in prison better than Fed Ex. Dom would be a marked man before the key turned to lock Garcia up.
Mumbling to himself, Chino stood up and left without a word. He needed to get word to Oscar. Now. Because if something happened to Dom before he got a chance to let him know about this, he would be the one marked. Angel would hold him responsible.
Fuck!
Dominick's attention was drawn back to Isabella, again thinking about how attractive she was. He watched as she hurried to the door with downcast eyes. Dominick and the CO posted at the door exchanged a look. He’d known the opportunity to get her alone would present itself soon, and this was it. The guard’s palm had been greased in advance so he knew exactly what to do.
When Isabella tried to leave, he stopped her and told her he needed to fill out an incident report before she left. Her accent becoming more pronounced, Isabella told him that wasn’t necessary, and when the guard insisted it was the prison’s policy, she became visibly upset. She was still protesting as the guard led her out. Dominick waited ten minutes, then got up and followed them.
Making his way to a small office not far from the visitation area, Dom spotted the guard posted outside. When he saw Dom, he glanced both ways to make sure they were in the clear.
“Ten minutes, Spain.”
“Twenty,” Dominick replied as he brushed past him.
“Spain…”
With one hand on the doorknob, Dominick reached into the pocket of the other and pulled out a small vial of coke. Handing it to the CO, he repeated, “Twenty.”
The guard snatched the vial from Dominick’s hand. “Twenty. Not a second more,” he gruffly conceded as he hurried away.
Dominick opened the door and immediately saw Isabella nervously pacing within the small space with her arms folded. When she heard the door open, she turned, ready to again reiterate she wasn’t going to file any report but the argument died on her lips when she saw Dom standing there. Dom closed the door behind him. When he reached back to lock it, Isabella’s eye flickered with uncertainty.
“What are you doing here?”
Her voice was distrustful and slightly accusatory, but Dominick noticed her breathing quicken. He let his eyes slowly run over her from head to toe then back up again. They paused on her heaving breasts, fully outlined beneath the thin shirt she wore. He forced himself to pull his gaze up to look at her. He walked towards her, taking his time answering her question. Isabella tried to take a step back, but the table blocked her from moving more than an inch or so. Dominick’s eyes moved to the dark bruise covering her cheek. Isabella flinched when he brought his hand up to trace just underneath it.
“You okay?”
“What do you think?” she sneered as she jerked away from his touch.
Dominick studied her face, noticing she was about the same age as he, maybe a year or two older and very attractive. “Why do you put up with that?”
Isabella gave a snort of disbelief, slicing her eyes away from him. “Don’t stand there and act as if you care how Julio treats me. You wanted him to see you staring at me. This is your fault!” she spat as she pointed to her face.
