• Preshrink your fabric by washing, drying, and pressing it before starting your project.

Step 1. Cut out all pieces from the fabric.

First, cut out the Photo File pattern pieces provided in the pocket at the front of this book.

Pin the pattern pieces to the fabric according to the instructions below. Then, using your scissors, cut the fabric according to the outlines on the pattern pieces, in the quantities given below.

FROM THE FABRIC FOR THE FRONT AND BACK PANELS

• Cut 1 front panel on the fold

: Use main panel pattern piece.

• Cut 1 back panel on the fold: Use main panel pattern piece.

FROM THE FABRIC FOR THE INSIDE POCKET AND FLAPS

• Cut 1 inside pocket on the fold: Use main panel pattern piece.

• Cut 4 flaps on the fold: Use flap pattern piece.

FROM THE HEAVYWEIGHT FUSIBLE INTERFACING

• Cut 2 flaps on the fold: Use flap pattern piece.

To cut your pattern piece on the fold of your fabric, first fold the fabric with
Wrong
sides together and the selvage edges aligned. Then lay your pattern piece so that the edge to be cut on the fold is even with the folded edge of your fabric. Once the piece is cut out, open it up to make one full panel.

In order to keep your pieces organized, mark each piece by writing the name on a piece of masking tape and attaching to the
Wrong
side of each panel as it is cut.

Step 2. Attach the interfacing to 2 of the flaps.

Place the fusible side of the interfacing onto the
Wrong
side of the first flap. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to fuse the interfacing to the flap. Repeat this step to attach the other interfacing flap to a second flap.

Step 3. Attach the first interfaced flap to the back panel.

With
Right
sides together, match up the raw edges on one long side of the interfaced flap and the back panel and pin them in place. Stitch a
¹
/
₂
″ seam across the matched raw edges, backstitching at each end. Press the seam allowances toward the back panel. Repeat this step to attach the second interfaced flap to the other long side.

Step 4. Finish the long side raw edge on the front panel.

With the
Wrong
side of the front panel facing up, fold the raw edge of one long side

/
₄
″ in toward the
Wrong
side of the panel and press. Fold the edge

″ in again and press. Topstitch along the inner folded edge.

Step 5. Attach the first flap to the inside pocket.

With
Right
sides together, match up one of the long side raw edges of the inside pocket with the top raw edge on the first flap and pin them in place. Starting on the left side of the inside pocket, stitch a

/
₂
″ seam,
¹
/
₂
″ in from each of the side raw edges, backstitching at each end. (This will leave an opening to insert the cardboard inside the pocket.) Press the seam allowances toward the inside pocket.

Step 6. Attach the front panel to the inside pocket.

Place the
Right
side of the inside pocket (with flap attached) onto the
Wrong
side of the front panel. Match up the seam connecting the flap to the inside pocket with the finished edge of the front panel and pin them in place. Machine baste with a
¹
/
₄
″ seam down both short sides and across the bottom raw edges.

Step 7. Attach the other flap lining to the front panel.

With
Right
sides together, match up the raw edge of the long side on the front panel (with the inside pocket attached) with the top raw edge on the flap and pin them in place. Stitch a

/
₂
″ seam across the matched raw edges, backstitching at each end. Press the seam allowances toward the inside pocket.

Step 8. Attach the front panel to the back panel.

a.
Place the front panel (with the inside pocket and non-interfaced flaps attached) onto the back panel (with the interfaced flaps attached),
Right
sides together, matching up the raw edges, and pin them in place. Stitch a
¹
/
₂
″ seam completely around the outside raw edges, backstitching at each end.

b.
Using your scissors, trim the corners

in the seam allowance, making sure not to clip your stitching.

Pull the Photo File through the opening you left at the top of the inside pocket in step 5, using a turning tool

to push out the corners, and press the Photo File flat.

Fold the Photo File across the width, finding the center of both of the flaps. Gently press a center crease across both flaps. (You will use this crease in step 10b to mark the placement for the grommets.)

Step 9. Insert the cardboard.

a.
First, turn your Photo File with the
Right
side of the back panel facing up, match up the seam along the bottom flap with the seam on the front panel, and pin it in place. “Stitch in the ditch”

along the seam on the back panel, backstitching at each end.

b.
Insert the cardboard into the opening you left on the side of the inside pocket. Push the cardboard completely inside, placing the seam allowances all on one side of the cardboard.

Step 10. Finish the Photo File.

a.
Next, fold the seam allowances on the opening inside the inside pocket and pin the opening closed. Topstitch close to the folded edge of the inside pocket. (This will keep the cardboard inside the file and close the opening.)

b.
On the
Right
side of the flap, starting at the top finished edge on the center crease, measure and mark
¹
/
₂
″ down using your ruler and chalk pencil. Repeat this step to measure and mark the placement for the other grommet on the other flap.

c.
Center your first grommet over the center crease and the

/

″ mark you made in step 10b. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to attach the grommet to the

side of the flap. Place the finished side of the grommet on the
Right
side of the flap. Repeat this step to attach another grommet onto the
Right
side of the other flap.

d.
Fold the flaps toward the front panel. Then, feed one end of your ribbon in through the first grommet on the lining side of the first flap and out the
Right
side. Then feed the other end of your ribbon through the second grommet on the lining side of the second flap and out through the grommet to the
Right
side of the flap. Take the 2 ends of the ribbon and tie them together to make a bow.
