CHAPTER 1
MEGA

I was laying on my back chilling in my California king bed, with my hands placed behind my head, deep in my thoughts when the ringing of my phone interrupted them. When I saw that it was my partner Israel calling from Columbus, GA, I sat up in bed. It had been a couple of weeks since the last time I spoke to him. I had set up a few shops in Columbus a few years back, and he was managing and running shit for me. Business normally ran smoothly over that way, so the only time that I talked to him was when deposits were being made into my bank account, or if we needed to re-up on our products.

“What up my boy?” I said while sitting up in bed with my back against the headboard. The information that he provided was what I least expected. A devious smile crept across my face when Israel told me that he had just seen Erica’s nutty ass coming out of the Peachtree Mall with a hand full of shopping bags.
The nerve of this bitch!
I thought. I guess she felt like Taysia’s case was closed being that no one was able to identify her as a suspect in the shooting that took place that day at Applebee’s. You would’ve thought Applebee’s had surveillance cameras inside of the restaurant. In fact, they did have cameras set up but there were no tapes. What kind of shit is that? I wasn’t sweating it though.  I was actually glad that the law had no idea that it was Erica who was behind that chaos. I wanted to deal with her personally. Israel followed her home and texted me the address as soon as we got off the phone. She had no idea that I would be paying her a visit very soon.

Getting out of my bed, I stretched, yawned and made my way to the bathroom to handle my personal hygiene. I grabbed my toothbrush and stepped inside of the Ariel Platinum steam shower that I recently had installed. I had acquired a habit of brushing my teeth while in the shower ever since I was a git. I let the steam disperse around my body for a few minutes then squeezed the last bit of Tom Ford shower gel that I had left in the bottle, inside of my washcloth. I made a mental note to order some more of that ASAP. Shit smelled good as fuck! There wasn’t a need for cologne after I showered using that. I turned on the shower for a refreshing rinse. I stepped out wrapping a towel around my waist, body soaking wet and all. I went straight to my closet.

My closet was loaded with all types of gear. I had clothes and shoes everywhere. A nigga didn’t know where to start. Shit, I thought only females have those type of problems. I finally narrowed it down to a pair of Levi jeans, a button down denim vest accompanied by a white crew neck t-shirt. The gold Cartier that I wrapped around my wrist, coordinated well with the gold chain that draped along the front of my all-white Giuseppe Zanotti sneakers. I checked myself out in the full body length mirror that rested on the door of my closet, ran my hands across my waves and pulled on my goatee that had extended.

Grabbing my keys off the dresser, I made my way downstairs and ran into my housekeeper, Mona. Mona was doing her normal duties by wiping down my leather sectional. She was humming her favorite Gospel song, “I know I’ve Been Changed,” by Lashun Pace. That song always took me back to when I was younger because my Grandma Mildred would sing it every Sunday as she cooked dinner. The lemon scent from the Pledge furniture polish, assaulted my nostrils.

“Good afternoon, Mr. Banks. I thought you were never going to get up out that bed,” Mona greeted me as she continued to do her job.

“I didn’t want to,” I honestly stated and we both laughed.

Mona was a pleasant older lady and had been on my payroll for a couple of years now. She was very attractive to be her age and she favored the actress Phylicia Rashad. Mona looked as if she was hanging around in her late fifties, and because of her, I never really needed a woman around the house. Not only did she keep my crib looking nice, but she cooked me dinner every day before she went home as well. Even when I wasn’t home she still cooked for me. There would be a plate in the microwave, oven, or refrigerator by the time that I made it back home, and even though I had a personal chef on speed dial, Mona always insisted. While my chef cooked me that rich folks’ shit, Mona brought out that good ole soul food cooking that my grandma be cooking on Sundays.

“I cooked your favorite today; baked spaghetti, corn on the cob, English peas, garlic bread, with some good ole sweet tea to wash it down. I went ahead and cooked it because I have a doctor’s appointment in a few, so I won’t be here that long,” she informed.

“Ok, thanks Mona, I really ‘preciate it, but I gotta run off for a sec. You betta believe tho’, as soon as I get back home, it’s going down!” I said as I rubbed my stomach in a circular motion.

“Oh, no problem chile! It’s in the oven whenever you’re ready for it.” She smiled and made her way into the dining room.

I walked down to the garage and pressed the button to let up the garage door. Sliding inside of my Bentley Continental, I put in my Kevin Gates CD and turned it up as I backed out of my garage. When I made it to my security gate, I stopped and chatted with my security guard. We talked for a quick second and then when the gates opened, I drove out of my residence. I rapped along to the words of Gates and bobbed my head to the music.

“24 hours, nigga, 7 days a week
Me, I don’t get tired
I let you other niggas sleep
Turn up for that check
And yeah I get it out the streets
Hustle like I’m starving
Going hard, I gotta eat”

I turned up it louder when my favorite part came on.

“Watch how I break my wrist
Make that water whip
Stretch it out, then flip
I’m all about my chips”

I had just jumped in traffic when my phone started ringing. It was Monica calling; the nurse that I gave some dick in the restroom, at the hospital the night that Taysia lost her baby.

              “What’s good?” I answered.

“Hey stranger. What you up to?” she asked. I knew she wanted something, I could sense it in her voice.

“I’m on my way out of town right now. What’s up?” I asked.

“Oh, ya lil’ friend is my damn patient once again! You know how hard it is for me to assist her knowing y’all mess around? You know I love you Mega! Not only that, but why have you been avoiding my calls and shit?” she asked with an attitude that I really didn’t give a fuck about.

“Whoa! Slow ya roll Monica! What friend ma? Who you talkin’ about?” I asked.

“The married chick.” She knew not to call her a bitch, but I could still tell that she was pissed.

“Oh yeah…the fuck she doing in the hospital?” I asked as I did an illegal U-turn in the middle of the road. I checked my rearview mirror to make sure that the law hadn’t caught that.

“She’s in labor. Her husband is here with her so don’t even think about coming! I mean…unless there’s a possibility that the baby is yours,” she paused and waited for my response.

“Whatever yo! I’ll hit you up later on,” I said and ended the call on her.

Since Taysia was in labor that meant I would have to postpone my visit with Erica. I knew where the bitch was living so it was nothing for me to show up at her doorstep.

The cat and mouse game that Taysia and I had been playing over these past few months had a nigga turned on in the beginning, but now that she was pregnant with my seed, I wasn’t up for her bullshit ass games anymore! I called Trigga immediately. I needed for him to stop by a few traps and take up collections early today. I’m the only one that has access to all of my safes and accounts so I was going to use the money from the traps to bond out. That’s right! I already had it made up in my mind that I was going to jail today because I didn’t give a fuck!

While on the phone with Trigga, my lil’ chick Brittany was beeping in. I ended the call with Trigga and switched calls. Brittany and I chatted for a few since she was on her lunch break at work. I was feeling the fuck out of her, and if she played her cards right, I was willing to see how far we could go. She and Taysia were just alike in so many ways. The only difference between them was the fact that Brittany wasn’t married. Even though we had gotten close that still didn’t take away from the love that I had in my heart for Taysia. I was just about tired of playing with her.

A nigga like me could have any bitch I wanted, with a snap of my finger and at the drop of a dime, but it was just something about that girl from the first day I saw her at my grandma’s house, kept me persistent. She was still in my heart, but the game she was playing had me saying fuck it all. Right now, I just wanted to be a part of my seed’s life. That’s all that mattered to me at this point. When I got off the phone with Brittany, I sent Taysia a message just to see if she was still on that bullshit.

Me: Where the fuck you at?

When she didn’t respond, I knew that she was. I called her phone as I was pulling into the hospital parking lot, but she had turned it off. I hopped up out of my car and on my way inside of the hospital, I spotted JaMel’s BMW. On the next row, a few cars down was Taysia’s pink Bentley that I had bought her.
She want to play games with a nigga like me. Well, let the games begin.
Checking in at the front desk, I grabbed a visitor’s pass. Taysia was in room 523. I hopped on the elevator and made my way up to the labor and delivery floor. As the elevator took me up, all types of shit was running through my head and that wasn’t good at all. Especially for a nigga like me. When the doors to the elevator separated, the first two people I came in contact with were Kira and Taysia’s mom. The Sunkist soda that Kira was downing, shot straight out of her mouth and hit the floor, staining the beige carpet. I was expecting Taysia’s mom to say some slick shit, but to my surprise, she sat back in her chair flipping through a health magazine with a smirk on her face.

“Hey Mega, what’s up? They’re not letting anyone back there until she delivers the baby,” Kira said wiping her hands on the side of her pants as if they were dirty.

Yeah, she was nervous, as she should have been, but I knew what she was trying to do and that shit wasn’t going to work. She could come up with any distraction that she wanted to, I was going inside of that delivery room, and it was going to take for God himself to come down and stop me.

“Kira, I don’t know if ya girl told you or not, but that’s my baby that she’s about to have. So there ain’t nun’ that you or anyone else can say to make me turn around,” I said, and kept on walking with her walking closely behind me.

“Mega, please don’t go back there,” she begged. “Now is not the time for this. Whatever you and Taysia have going on, please just settle it when she’s released from the hospital,” she continued to plead, but I wasn’t paying her any attention. Everything that she was saying to me went in one ear and out of the other.

“Taysia, out of respect for Rock I’ma to tell you again nicely, THERE AIN’T NOTHING YOU CAN DO OR SAY TO TURN ME AROUND. This is between me and ya girl. I’m not feeling it today so I suggest you go have a seat back over there.” I pointed to where she was sitting when I first stepped off the elevator.

She must have felt my drift because she rolled her eyes and went and sat back down beside Taysia’s mom. I walked to the double doors and held my visitor’s pass up to the security system. Once I heard the confirmation beep, I glanced back over at Kira and saw that she was on the phone. I knew that she was calling my nigga Rock, but even he couldn’t stop me right now.

I made my way to Taysia’s room and it felt like all eyes were on a nigga. The nurses, the secretary, the CNAs; shit, it looked like everybody was watching if you ask me. It could’ve just been my guilty conscience because I knew that some shit was about to go down. I pushed the door open to room 523 and everybody’s attention turned towards me, including the doctor’s. From the look on Taysia’s face I could tell that she was beyond mortified that I had the audacity to burst up in her delivery room while she was getting ready to have a baby.

“SO YOU CAN’T ANSWER THE PHONE MRS. LADY?” I asked while staring her dead in her eyes, not giving a fuck about who was in the room with her!
