CHAPTER 5

Kyle brought Abby to another room which opened up to a wide space with a dome-like ceiling. Everything was stark white. On the other end were steel double doors with the sign in an alien language.

Dr. Ashkin followed behind them silently. “This is our special ward,” he said.

Beside the double doors was a large flat TV screen that flashed images of patients on hospital beds, each one in his or her own private room with a health care attendant. Doctors were shown to be busy checking up on them. All the medical staff members were clad in white suits and masks.

Kyle began to explain what was happening in the planet – how a virus had been infecting a lot of Planet Krach's inhabitants and causing them to get fatal heart attacks one by one. Because it had been spreading fast and wide without any permanent cure, the planet was in danger of soon losing everyone and eventually becoming extinct.

“Mom, I swear they're not making it up,” Kyle said quietly, his eyes pleading with hers so she would believe him. “I have seen their condition with my own eyes, right behind those doors. Those images on the screen – they are all real. It’s happening right now.”

Abby just stared at the images, not sure whether to be more astounded by the pitiful sight or by her son's explanation and apparent concern for these aliens. In the first place, she still couldn't get over the fact that aliens do exist and that she was actually in a different planet at that exact moment.

Kyle put a reassuring arm around her mom. “They are good aliens. I feel it in my gut.”

Abby nodded, but was still speechless.

“And I'm the only one who can help them…” Kyle trailed off.

Abby turned to him in surprise. “Why? How?” she wanted to know, unable to connect all the events.

Kyle launched into a summarized history of Planet Imux and how generations of the royal family were said to have healing powers. He'd apparently already gone through all of Bladkov's research as he spoke like an expert, eventually getting to the part where evil aliens from another planet had attacked and destroyed the entire Planet Imux world just to get their hands on the powerful DNA strands and use these to make their clan possess the same special ability.

However, the people of Imux had fought to their death. They had lost battle after battle, but had not given up. Some were able to escape in space ships, but there was no more record of the Imux aliens afterward. Up to this time, nobody knew if any of them had actually survived.

“As of now, I'm the only known member of the Imux royal family left in the entire universe,” Kyle finished. “I have healing powers, Mom. I got them from my dad.”

Abby didn't know what to make of it. An image of Kyle's dad suddenly appeared in her mind--- the tall, handsome, and charming Olven who'd swept her off her feet during one of the sorority parties. She was just 19 years old then, young and carefree, naïve and eager to fall in love. They'd gone out for an entire month before he'd gotten her pregnant. Then he'd disappeared, breaking her heart and leaving her to fend for herself.

She'd been fortunate enough to have understanding and supportive parents who'd helped her through her pregnancy and had continued to be there for her and Kyle until she got to graduate from college.

“Olven was an alien…” she murmured pensively, more to herself than to her son. Instantly, she recalled how he'd always looked so young for his age and how she'd once caught him lifting the car and trying to change the wheel without any tools, which he'd dismissed as her imagination. He'd also been very vague about his family background and childhood.

At that moment, she also remembered that night when they'd been on their way home from a bar with some friends. They had met a minor accident because the driver was a little drunk. Everybody had incurred injuries except Olven.

Abby had felt something painful on her head and had seen some blood flowing down the side of her face. Olven had touched her head shortly and after a while, the pain had gone away. In the hospital, the doctors said that both of them had no injury at all. They didn't bother checking if the blood was actually hers. She'd been too shaken up to care, anyway. She was just glad to be okay and was thankful nobody had been seriously hurt.

“Yes, Olven was an alien from Planet Imux,” Dr. Ashkin confirmed, suddenly speaking up. “He was no ordinary alien. He was a well-known prince who had escaped. Nobody knew what had happened to him, but now we can figure out that he ended up on Planet Earth.”

“At first, he'd told me that he would help me bring up the baby,” Abby shared, her hazelnut eyes clouding over. “But then he suddenly disappeared without any word after that.”

“My guess is that he'd received a threat,” Dr. Ashkin said in a serious tone. “Perhaps he never meant to leave. Maybe he just didn't want anybody to know that there was going to be another member of his family who would be likely to carry the healing ability in his genes. Maybe… he wanted to protect both of you from the same evil aliens who'd attacked their planet.”

What he was saying made sense. Abby's heart began to constrict--- not because she still harbored feelings for Kyle's father but because it was just too much for her to process. The emotional scars had been so deep, and she'd carried them for so long within her. And now here she was, hearing from an alien the explanation that she'd been waiting for.

Finally, it was time to let go. She had not been worthless as she'd often been led to believe because of so many failed relationships.

“I'd known for some time now that I could somehow heal myself,” Kyle admitted to his mom then. “There were a couple of times that I would stumble or accidentally cut myself but there was always no wound. I never had any headaches or physical pain. And didn't you notice, Mom, that I never got sick while I was growing up?”

Abby nodded in agreement. “I thought… you were just a really healthy boy…”

“Well, I was. I am. But not in the human sense,” Kyle said, grinning. He looked as if he was truly proud and happy of what he was. “I'm abnormally healthy.”

“That's amazing,” was all Abby could say as she remained stunned.

“It is!” Kyle exclaimed, his hazelnut eyes gleaming. “But what's even more amazing is that I might actually have the ability to heal many others, not just myself. I can help so many people, Mom! And I want to do it.”

Abby could not say anything. A part of her was proud of her son for being so mature about all this and for having such a good heart even for strange people whom he didn't know. But another part of her was just too confused and bewildered.

That evening, there were so many thoughts swirling in her mind and so many emotions lurking in her heart that she just couldn't sleep. She'd been given a solo room to sleep in, which had even been made to somehow appear like an ordinary hotel room. Her son Kyle had fallen asleep earlier in his own room. She was still a bit dazed by the fact that he seemed to fit right in. Well, now that she knew he was part-alien, it really shouldn't be a surprise.

CHAPTER 6

It had been almost a week now, but still Dr. Ashkin couldn't get her out of his head. She filled his thoughts even as he worked or even while he was sleeping. He could smell her intoxicating natural scent even when she was still far away, fragrant in a subtle way, always seeming to shake him awake no matter how exhausted he felt.

From the moment he'd caught her sneaking out of that door the first time she'd been in his laboratory, the image of her beautiful oval-shaped face, bright hazelnut eyes, and tousled dark brown hair had gotten imprinted in his mind. For some strange reason, his heart had begun beating just a little bit faster as his eyes had quickly swept through her curvy body.

It had been so long since he'd last felt this way. Since his wife had passed away, he had dedicated every single waking moment of his life to his medical mission and research. He never thought he would ever get attracted to anyone again, that somebody special would walk into his life once more and affect him this much. The funny thing was – he didn't even know this woman at all! What's more, she was human.

“Earth to Doc! Earth to Doc!” a deep, crackling voice suddenly said in his ear, awakening him from his reverie. It was Bladkov, being his usually goofy self. “Or should I say, Krach to Doc! As in Planet Krach!” He then howled with laughter at his own joke.

Dr. Ashkin laughed despite himself. He could always count on Bladkov to lift his spirits no matter what.

“What's on your mind?” Bladkov asked curiously, his black eyes shining as brightly as his bald head. “Is it a certain brown-haired pretty human?”

“None of your business, Bladkov,” the doctor muttered, going back to his test tubes and computers. “What do you want?”

Bladkov guffawed loudly. “Well, the kid is dying to explore the planet but it's still not safe to get out. So I'm taking him instead to the nearest planet where we can relax and have fun.”

“Planet Cravton?” Dr. Ashkin asked. “What did Abby say?”

“Well, of course she wouldn't allow him to go by himself,” Bladkov pointed out, as if it was the most obvious thing. “Want to join our little expedition?”

Dr. Ashkin shrugged, even though inside he was thrilled to have an opportunity to spend some quality time with Abby and get to know her better. Being cooped up inside his lab-slash-house which was directly attached to the structure of the main hospital was also beginning to get to him. He needed some fresh air and sunshine.

Their space ship was still being repaired, so they had no choice but to take the two flying pods, each of which could fit only two people.

Naturally, Kyle opted to go with Bladkov because the guy simply amused him and acted closer to his age. They had really hit it off and seemed as if they'd been buddies forever. Meanwhile, Abby was left with Dr. Ashkin.

“I'm not fond of small, enclosed spaces, Doctor,” she said as they were about to ride.

Dr. Ashkin smiled kindly at her, his heart silently hammering away. “Don't worry, Abby. I promise it's going to be a very fast, smooth ride. You won't even feel a thing.”

“Thank you, Doctor. I've just sort of gotten traumatized from my first time in one of these weird pods, you know,” Abby said, chuckling nervously.

“I understand,” Dr. Ashkin replied as he held out his hand from inside the enclosure. She took his hand and stepped into the tiny space.

An electric current shot up his arm as their hands touched. He felt just a little bit woozy as their shoulders grazed and her delightful aroma filled his nostrils. “I won't let anything happen to you, Abby,” he whispered to her as the opening narrowed and then vanished, leaving no trace of any door, gap, or line.

In response, she turned to him and smiled. Their faces were inches away from one another. It took all of Dr. Ashkin's self-control to keep himself from leaning over and kissing her at that very moment.

“Planet Cravton,” Dr. Ashkin stated to the pod. The light turned off and it began to move up, seemingly gliding in the air.

“Oh, my God,” Abby suddenly uttered.

“What? Are you scared of the dark?” Dr. Ashkin asked in a worried tone.

“Uh, no,” Abby said, giggling. “It's just that I was so stupid. So is this pod voice activated? Will it open if I just tell it to?”

“If it's not suspended mid-air, yes it will open.”

Abby gave out an exasperated sound.  “Damn. And I actually panicked.”

Dr. Ashkin chuckled. “So how'd you get out from here then if you hadn't figured that out?”

“I felt my way around and then as I crouched down, I found this tiny button and pressed it.”

“Aahhh… that's the emergency button.”

Abby smiled. “I see. Well, that still makes me a little clever and not entirely stupid, I guess.”

“Definitely just a little clever,” Dr. Ashkin emphasized in a teasing tone. He was enjoying their easy banter and was beginning to feel the friendship developing. For the past few days, they'd talked a lot and established rapport, but not really in this manner. Now he could feel that she was really warming up to him, which made him tremendously happy.

Abby nudged him with her shoulder after he said that. It was an automatic response toward a joking friend.

He nudged her back, which made her laugh. He laughed with her, feeling as if some of the burden he'd had on his shoulders for more than a year now had been lifted.

“By the way, I already emailed your best friend Claire through our system, which I connected to the Internet in your world,” Dr. Ashkin said. “I told her what you asked me to, that you've found Kyle and decided to go on a vacation first.”

“Really? Did she reply already?” Abby asked, facing him again.

He faced her too, his eyes seeming to connect with hers. “She said, 'Don't lie to me. You're off having the time of your life with some aliens in some crazy planet!'“

Abby's mouth dropped open for a while before she grinned widely. “Doctor!”

“Kidding,” he said as he grinned back.

“You're actually funny,” she then noted.

This made him laugh. “Is that a bad thing?”

Abby laughed too, the sound of her voice seeming to envelop his entire being in a warm, sweet embrace. “It's a good thing,” she answered. “Definitely a good thing.”
