“Is this far enough?” Conner asked.
Mel looked toward the docks. “It looks that way.”
He cut the motor and they sat. The quiet was unsettling. Mel took the lid off the urn.
“I guess I should say goodbye. Maybe you already found Grace. Tell her I said hi. I only met you once and you smelled nice. You had soft cheeks. Goodbye, Aunt Audrey.”
Mel put the urn over the side and turned it upside down. The wind carried the small particles of ash while the fragments of bone lay on the water, then disappeared.
“What do I do with this?” Mel asked, holding the urn aloft.
“Do you want to keep it?” Conner asked.
“For what?”
“A keepsake?”
Mel looked at the cylindrical, brushed metal container. “I guess I could put flowers in it.”
“That sounds good.”
“I guess I’ll keep it.”
“Are you ready to go?”
“Yeah. She’s gone.”
Conner put the motor on and steered the boat toward the dock. Mel looked to the spot where she had released the ashes and smiled. She had done something good. If karma was to be trusted, someday, someone would do it for her.
