To be brought back together, to be reconciled, I had to lose myself in the shadows and find my way back out to the light.

I need one last look at the fireflies before heading backstage.

I glance over my shoulder and all five points of light fly higher and higher until I can barely see them anymore. But I follow their steady glow like beacons until they are so far up in the sky that they are soon indistinguishable from the brilliance of the stars.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

I'M GRATEFUL TO MY EDITOR JOCELYN DAVIES.
This book only exists because of your keen eye and collaboration. You always know how to inspire me to write the best story possible. Thank you.

Thank you, of course, to my agent, Margaret Riley King, who tells it to me straight. You have an awesome editorial eye, and I so value your feedback and loyalty. A big thank you to Erika Niven, who always points me in the right direction!

Thank you to Anna Deroy, who loved my first book and made all of this possible. I promise, one day, I will try to find a way to pay forward this life-changing opportunity.

Thank you to the incomparable and generous CCW's: Mariellen Langworthy, Claire Nicogossian, Linda Melino, Rebecca DeMetrick, Maggie Hayes, Ashley Bray, and Tracy Hart.

There are always so many people who make a book possible. Some of them are Hannah Moderow, Kristin Sandoval, An Na,
Katie Caramiciu, Jennie Maizel-McKiernan and my friends at the amazing Writing Barn in Austin, Texas.

Last, but certainly not least: A.M. Jenkins. You told me to “go there.” You said, “write it, don't be afraid. If you don't feel it, neither will your characters.” Thank you, Amanda.

For everything.
