Ravishan leaned against him, just a little. John wrapped one arm around Ravishan’s waist.

“You’re so quiet,” Ravishan said.

“I was just thinking.” It wasn’t really true. He had been trying not to think.

“About what?” Ravishan asked.

John was silent for several moments as he formed a simple sentence in his mind. He didn’t want to think about any of it. Slowly he forced one word after another out, as if they couldn’t be linked to any meaning.

“Behr is dead,” John said. “And Loshai has been taken to Umbhra’ibaye. They’re going to induct her into the issusha’im.”

Ravishan paled. “What happened?”

John tried to repeat what Hann’yu had told him. He found the words breaking as he said them. He wanted to be clear and exact about it all. But he couldn’t speak of Bill’s murder or Laurie’s imprisonment without imagining the events themselves. He saw Bill’s body crumpling as a single bullet ripped through him. Laurie must have screamed as flames gushed up all around her. She would have clung to Bill’s dead body as the city guards dragged her away.

John’s voice failed him and he covered his face with his hands. Ravishan embraced him gently and waited. At last John managed to finish the few sentences that hurt him so deeply.

“I’m sorry,” Ravishan said softly.

John leaned against him. Snow fell in thick walls. John could hardly make out the trees across the riverbank. Ravishan’s body was warm. There was such comfort in just his nearness. John pushed his thoughts of death and loss aside. He thought of the warmth of Ravishan’s body and the taste of his mouth.

They clung close together beneath the stone bridge, sheltering each other from the storm that John pulled down around them.
