Epilogue

“I need two burgers with fries and one chicken sandwich with cheese.”

My boss, Martin, looked through the small window that separated the kitchen from the bar area in the golf course restaurant at Cedar Creek. “Got it.”

I had been back home less than a week, and I was already working full time. Here, on the grassy slopes of one of Michigan’s premier golf courses, the horrors of the last few days of school seemed far away.

“Did you hear about the new guy?”

My co-worker, Jen, slipped up behind the bar behind me with an excited expression on her face. She was a little boy crazy.

“What new guy?”

“They’re getting a new golf pro in the pro shop – and he’s hot.”

“You’ve seen him.”

“Oh, yeah. He’s got big muscles and big dimples.”

I already had a guy on my mind – and his dimples were pretty impressive – so I wasn’t exactly interested in Jen’s new conquest.

“I’m sure you’ll have him right where you want him in a few days,” I laughed.

“Oh, I’m sure I will.”

“Who are you guys talking about?” Martin asked, poking his head through the window.

“The new golf pro.”

“Yeah, I heard that he’s actually some politician’s kid. He got the job thanks to a call from his dad.”

A thought wandered through my brain, but I pushed it aside. “Which politician?”

“I don’t know,” Martin shrugged. “I think he’s a senator or something.”

No way.

“Shhh,” Jen warned, smoothing her wavy shoulder-length brown hair. “Here he comes.”

I looked up at the glass doors that separated the restaurant from the pro shop. I wasn’t surprised by the tall figure I saw walking through the door. Aric made quite the imposing sight.

“What are you doing here?’

“Working,” Aric said innocently.

“You two know each other?” Jen asked nervously.

“We do,” Aric conceded. “In fact, we’re dating.”

Jen turned an incredulous look in my direction. “You said you weren’t dating anyone.”

“She didn’t know about it yet,” Aric said with a sly smile.

“You knew about this when you said goodbye to me at the dorms, didn’t you? That’s why you didn’t put up a fight.”

“That’s an ugly accusation.”

“You’re not denying it.”

“I see no point in denying it,” Aric smiled. “I’ll pick you up at your house at 7 p.m.”

“For what?”

“Our date.”

“I said I’d date you when we got back to school.”

“I’m moving up the timetable.”

“You can’t do that,” I protested.

“I just did.”

With those words, Aric winked at Jen and then walked back out of the restaurant and into the pro shop. Jen turned to me with an accusatory look. “You just stole my summer crush.”

“You can have him,” I muttered.

“Oh, please,” Jen said. “He obviously came here for you and no one can say no to that for very long.”

She had a point. Well, there went my relaxing summer.
