He stopped at the center of her garden and faced her, hands in his pockets. “Love isn’t enough without trust and honesty.”

Nodding, she skirted the path to meet him in the middle. “I should have trusted you, but it’s not a mistake I’ll make again. I thought you were on my dad’s side.”

“I was, but it was your side, too.”

“Sometimes that’s hard to see.” She wanted to cross her arms but she kept them at her sides, open to him. “He and I had a talk. He knows about us.”

“Us?” Sebastian asked.

“Us,” she repeated, taking his hand. Because it wasn’t enough, she closed the distance and kissed him.

The instant their lips met, the world righted. His arms wrapped around her, and she knew that she was wrong about the garden:
this
was her favorite spot in the world.

His hand tangled in her hair. “Did you ever tell me if Edward has a shotgun?”

She grinned. “Not yet.”

“Good to know.” He tugged her head back. “You have purple hair again.”

“I didn’t want to falsely advertise what you were getting.”

“I was sad when you got rid of it the first time.” He looked her in the eyes. “This is the real you; the you I fell in love with.”

Her heart threatened to burst. “I love you, too, in case that wasn’t clear.”

“Are you sure?” He caressed her face. “I want you to be sure of what you want.”

“I want this. You, here, for the rest of our lives.” She kissed him to show him she meant it. It was all any girl wanted. She was just lucky enough to have found it.

Epilogue

Y
ou can’t imagine what it’s like to see the fruits of your labor ripen.

Okay, I didn’t really work
that
hard. I was more of a seeing-eye dog for the blind, because—let me tell you—Ariana and Sebastian were completely myopic.

That means sightless: FYI.

Anyway, they can totally see now.

I sit in my windowsill, looking up at the roof of Ariana’s building. I’ve never been up there, but I can see the plants she pours her love and passion into.

This evening it’s different. This evening she has love and passion for more than just her plants. This evening, there’s magic.

I smile, loving the twinkle of the fairy lights. But what I love more is seeing Ariana and Sebastian kissing like they never want to stop.

My heart is full for them.

But, gosh darn—about time.

Shaking my head I start to get out of the window when something down below across the street catches my attention.

George comes out of her repair shop wearing the awful overalls that she’s always got on. She pulls down the metal garage door, locks it, and heads around the corner, probably to Bronwyn’s.

A niggle of an image pops in my mind—an indistinct outline that was obviously a man.

Oh boy. George is next.

The stars help me—I’m not looking forward to this one. George isn’t only stubborn, but she’s set in her ways. Getting her to accept the man she’s destined to be with isn’t going to be an easy task.

But I’m pretty sure I’m up for the challenge. I blow her a kiss.

She stops on the corner, right before she’s out of sight, frowning. Then she looks up right at me.

I wiggle my fingers at her.

Her eyes narrow in suspicion, and she continues on her way.

Soon, George. I close the window and go inside. Very soon, if the feeling behind my eyes is any sign.

Legend of Kate

Kate has tangoed at midnight with a man in blue, furry chaps, dueled with flaming swords in the desert, and strutted on bar tops across the world and back. She’s been kissed under the Eiffel Tower, had her butt pinched in Florence, and been serenaded in New Orleans. She found Happy Ever After in San Francisco with her Magic Man.

Kate’s the bestselling author of the Summerhill series and critically acclaimed Laurel Heights Novels, as well as the Pillow Talk and Guardians of Destiny series. She’s been translated into several languages and is quite proud to say she’s big Down Under. All her books are about strong, independent women and the sexy alpha heroes who love them.

Most days, you can find Kate in her favorite café, working on her latest novel. Sometimes she’s wearing a tutu. She may or may not have a jeweled dagger strapped to her thigh . . .
