“You aren’t
unworthy.” My mother snorted. “But I will take it back if it would make you
feel better.”
“It would. I’m
sorry. I messed up.”
My mother’s
image shuddered in and out, and then the water mist was gone. A lone dog baying
in the distance told me she’d crossed over into our realm. No sooner had I
worked that out did she wrap her small arms around me.
“Remember, my
precious girl, failures are only future wins.” She pressed a soft kiss to my
forehead.
I nodded
because she was right. I’d seen the fate-spinner’s spools of thread. One bump
early on in a thread paved the way for the amazing things of the future. But I
couldn’t see how any of this would become a win.
As if reading
my mind she said, “Just because you cannot see it now…” She brushed a hand over
my head. “Does not mean it isn’t there waiting.” My mother stepped back,
chucking her hand beneath my chin. “Chin up.” Her brief moue softened into a
fond expression. “You have done amazing things in the past few weeks. I am
proud of you. Continue the good work and you could earn a bonus.”
A bonus?
Would I get a coupon for a
free steak dinner?
A ride on a gryphon?
I’d always
wanted to ride a gryphon, but she’d said they were too dangerous.
Maybe it would
be another gift of cash. I’d need money if I had any hope of keeping the shop
open past July.
She released
her hold on my chin and then disappeared with a spray of mist-like particles in
all directions. I flopped onto my faded futon, staring at the beanbag chair.
My shop’s
continued success was still a challenge to tackle now that I had the ring problem
solved. My glum mood faded into anticipation. This was exactly the kind of
challenge I
wanted
.
Magic might be
my life, but business was my passion. And everyone needed a little passion in
their lives.
Even the only sorceress.
