Luke 23:13-43

13
And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
14
said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined
him
before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:
15
no, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.
16
I will therefore chastise him, and release
him.
17
(For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)

18
And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this
man,
and release unto us Barabbas:
19
(who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)
20
Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.
21
 But they cried, saying, Crucify
him,
crucify him.

22
And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let
him
go.

23
And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.
24
And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.
25
And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

26
And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear
it
after Jesus.
27
And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.
28
But Jesus turning unto them said,
Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.
29

For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed
are
the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.
30

Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.
31

For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

32
And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.
33
And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

34
 Then said Jesus,
Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.
And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

35
And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided
him,
saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.
36
And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,
37
and saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.
38
And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39
And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

40
But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?
41
And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.
42
And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

43
 And Jesus said unto him,
Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Psalms 97:1–98:9

1
 The L
ORD
reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitude of isles be glad
thereof.

2
 Clouds and darkness
are
round about him: righteousness and judgment
are
the habitation of his throne.

3
A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about.

4
His lightnings enlightened the world: the earth saw, and trembled.

5
The hills melted like wax at the presence of the L
ORD
, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth.

6
The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory.

7
Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all
ye
gods.

8
Zion heard, and was glad; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O L
ORD
.

9
 For thou, L
ORD
,
art
high above all the earth: thou art exalted far above all gods.

10
 Ye that love the L
ORD
, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.

11
Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

12
 Rejoice in the L
ORD
, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

A Psalm.

98:
1
 O sing unto the L
ORD
a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.

2
 The L
ORD
hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.

3
He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

4
Make a joyful noise unto the L
ORD
, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

5
 Sing unto the L
ORD
with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

6
With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the L
ORD
, the King.

7
Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

8
 Let the floods clap
their
hands: let the hills be joyful together

9
 Before the L
ORD
; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.

Proverbs 14:7-8

7
Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not
in him
the lips of knowledge.

8
 The wisdom of the prudent
is
to understand his way: but the folly of fools
is
deceit.

Judges 8:18–9:21

18
Then said he [Gideon] unto Zebah and Zalmunna, What manner of men
were they
whom ye slew at Tabor?

And they answered, As thou
art,
so
were
they; each one resembled the children of a king.

19
 And he said, They
were
my brethren,
even
the sons of my mother:
as
the L
ORD
liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not slay you.
20
And he said unto Jether his firstborn, Up,
and
slay them. But the youth drew not his sword: for he feared, because he
was
yet a youth.

21
Then Zebah and Zalmunna said, Rise thou, and fall upon us: for as the man
is, so is
his strength. And Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took away the ornaments that
were
on their camels' necks.

22
Then the men of Israel said unto Gideon, Rule thou over us, both thou, and thy son, and thy son's son also: for thou hast delivered us from the hand of Midian.

23
And Gideon said unto them, I will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you: the L
ORD
shall rule over you.
24
And Gideon said unto them, I would desire a request of you, that ye would give me every man the earrings of his prey. (For they had golden earrings, because they
were
Ishmaelites.)

25
And they answered, We will willingly give
them.
And they spread a garment, and did cast therein every man the earrings of his prey.
26
And the weight of the golden earrings that he requested was a thousand and seven hundred
shekels
of gold; beside ornaments, and collars, and purple raiment that
was
on the kings of Midian, and beside the chains that
were
about their camels' necks.
27
And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city,
even
in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.

28
Thus was Midian subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted up their heads no more. And the country was in quietness forty years in the days of Gideon.

29
And Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house.
30
And Gideon had threescore and ten sons of his body begotten: for he had many wives.
31
 And his concubine that
was
in Shechem, she also bare him a son, whose name he called Abimelech.
32
And Gideon the son of Joash died in a good old age, and was buried in the sepulchre of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

33
And it came to pass, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel turned again, and went a whoring after Baalim, and made Baal-berith their god.
34
And the children of Israel remembered not the L
ORD
their God, who had delivered them out of the hands of all their enemies on every side:
35
neither shewed they kindness to the house of Jerubbaal,
namely,
Gideon, according to all the goodness which he had shewed unto Israel.

9:
1
And Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem unto his mother's brethren, and communed with them, and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying,
2
Speak, I pray you, in the ears of all the men of Shechem, Whether
is
better for you, either that all the sons of Jerubbaal,
which are
threescore and ten persons, reign over you, or that one reign over you? remember also that I
am
your bone and your flesh.

3
And his mother's brethren spake of him in the ears of all the men of Shechem all these words: and their hearts inclined to follow Abimelech; for they said, He
is
our brother.
4
And they gave him threescore and ten
pieces
of silver out of the house of Baal-berith, wherewith Abimelech hired vain and light persons, which followed him.
5
And he went unto his father's house at Ophrah, and slew his brethren the sons of Jerubbaal,
being
threescore and ten persons, upon one stone: notwithstanding yet Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left; for he hid himself.
6
And all the men of Shechem gathered together, and all the house of Millo, and went, and made Abimelech king, by the plain of the pillar that
was
in Shechem.

7
 And when they told
it
to Jotham, he went and stood in the top of mount Gerizim, and lifted up his voice, and cried, and said unto them, Hearken unto me, ye men of Shechem, that God may hearken unto you.
8
 The trees went forth
on a time
to anoint a king over them; and they said unto the olive tree, Reign thou over us.
9
But the olive tree said unto them, Should I leave my fatness, wherewith by me they honour God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

10
And the trees said to the fig tree, Come thou,
and
reign over us.
11
But the fig tree said unto them, Should I forsake my sweetness, and my good fruit, and go to be promoted over the trees?

12
Then said the trees unto the vine, Come thou,
and
reign over us.
13
And the vine said unto them, Should I leave my wine, which cheereth God and man, and go to be promoted over the trees?

14
Then said all the trees unto the bramble, Come thou,
and
reign over us.
15
And the bramble said unto the trees, If in truth ye anoint me king over you,
then
come
and
put your trust in my shadow: and if not, let fire come out of the bramble, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

16
 Now therefore, if ye have done truly and sincerely, in that ye have made Abimelech king, and if ye have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done unto him according to the deserving of his hands;
17
(for my father fought for you, and adventured his life far, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian:
18
and ye are risen up against my father's house this day, and have slain his sons, threescore and ten persons, upon one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his maidservant, king over the men of Shechem, because he
is
your brother;)
19
if ye then have dealt truly and sincerely with Jerubbaal and with his house this day,
then
rejoice ye in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you:
20
but if not, let fire come out from Abimelech, and devour the men of Shechem, and the house of Millo; and let fire come out from the men of Shechem, and from the house of Millo, and devour Abimelech.
21
And Jotham ran away, and fled, and went to Beer, and dwelt there, for fear of Abimelech his brother.
