In the new world of mega-organisms, meme teams are ripping, raging and roaring in ancient ways made new by new technologies. On May 12, 2004, Osama Bin Laden explained how powerfully the 21

century’s wireless jihad was driven by Mohammed’s memes. In a message to the worldwide community of Islam he wrote, “The main confrontation,” is “a religious and doctrinal one, not an economic or military one". “The clash,” he said as we’ve already seen, “is in fact a clash of civilizations”

—a clash of meme-driven mega-organisms. In other speeches, Bin Laden said that only one form of government is permissible in this world—government based on the laws God himself gave to Mohammed in the 7

century, shariah, strict Qur’anic law. Any other form of government is, he said with emphasis, “horrific”.

For those of us who still didn’t get it, Osama spelled out our democracy’s most appalling sin. “Rather than ruling by the Shariah of Allah in its Constitution and Laws, [you] choose to invent your own laws as you will and desire.”

Continued an outraged Osama, you refuse to “accept Islam to be the source of all legislation”

. In other words, instead of ruling by a religious code of law—by the
only
religious code of law given to humans by God himself, you and I dare elect parliaments and congresses to do something Satanic—to flick a finger in the face of god and to write man-made laws. Said Osama, this is why, “Democracy [is] the faith of the ignorant” and secular “freedom” is a Satanic “lie”

Bin Laden also told us just how powerfully meme-teams powered him and what those memes mean for you and me in a statement he addressed directly to us Americans, a statement most of us missed. “Why are we fighting and opposing you?” asked Osama. “What are we calling you to, and what do we want from you? The first thing that we are calling you to is Islam. The religion of the Unification of God; of freedom from associating partners with Him [Islamic code for Christianity], and rejection of this; of complete love of Him, the Exalted;” Then Osama commanded us to “the discarding of all the opinions, orders, theories and religions which contradict with the religion He sent down to His Prophet Muhammad.”

In other words, Osama called for a worldwide end to Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, yoga, New Age beliefs, secularism, humanism, Darwinism, constitutions, and separation of Church and State. And he did it on satellite TV and the Internet. His message was global and instant.

It should have come as no surprise, then, when on
October 17, 2004 in London, three highly articulate, intelligent, British-born Moslems were part of a London street mob that shouted, “
Make way for Islam, we want Islam”.
A CNN cameraman asked these gentlemen what their beef was. The middle class, western-dressed British Moslems answered that their version of Islam, “I
s not just a hatred for America. It is
a hatred for the whole of Western philosophy and Western civilization
, freedom, democracy, human rights, international law, all of these fake concepts that have been passed to us and behind that we have been oppressed. It is a hatred of all of this."

To drive home that point, on November 2, 2004, in Amsterdam, a 26-year-old Dutch Moroccan Moslem shot a man we’ve alluded to before, filmmaker
Theo Van Gogh, great grand-nephew of the artist Vincent Van Gogh,
while Van Gogh was bicycling.

of jihad imitated the killers of Ka’b the poet. He slashed Van Gogh’s throat, repeatedly stabbed Van Gogh’s body, apparently disemboweled the filmmaker, then drove a knife to the hilt into the corpse, using it to pin down a five-page “open letter” that predicted the downfall of the “infidel enemies of Islam” and stating,
“I know definitely that you, Oh America, will go down. I know definitely that you, Oh Europe, will go down. I know definitely that you, Oh Netherlands, will go down.”

But we Westerners weren’t the only ones on the receiving end of modern Islam’s meme-attack.
From January 2004 to July 2005 in Southern Thailand, an ongoing jihad killed 860 Thais in 18 months. Vendors at Thailand’s mosques sold CDs of beheadings with titles like “Jihad in Chechnya 2000”. Buddhist monks were slashed to death and Buddhist temples bombed. Grocers were threatened for selling pork. Twenty-five teachers were killed for teaching the “idol worship” of Buddhism and the godlessness of modern secularism instead of the one and only truth that children need in life--Islam. In the spirit of Mohammed’s treatment of many of his victims, the severed heads of the Buddhists were left in prominent places as a warning to unbelievers.

At the same time, on January 3, 2004, in Kashmir—a territory wedged between Moslem Pakistan and Hindu India--two mujahideen—makers of jihad--attacked a crowded railway station and killed four security men, then were mowed down by counter-fire.

The attackers’ goal was to liberate Kashmir from the “pagans”, “polytheists”, and “idol-worshippers” of Hindu and Buddhist India and to put Kashmir under Islamic rule. As of June 16, 2004,

calculated that the modern jihad over Kashmir had killed between 40,000 and 80,000 people.

In fact, the toll was far higher.
The Times
and AP overlooked a key fact: that Islam’s war to take over this region of the world had been going on for 1,292 years.

Roughly three weeks later, on February 27, 2004, a bomb on a SuperFerry

near Manila in the Philippines killed 116 people. The Philippine jihadist group Abu Sayyaf claimed the credit.

Then, on March 11, 2004, thirteen bombs on commuter trains in Spain were triggered to explode simultaneously at the height of Madrid’s rush hour. Ten went off, killing 191 people and wounding 1,460.

Al Qaeda in Europe claimed responsibility. Said al Qaeda’s taped statement, “You love life and we love death, which gives you an example of what the prophet Mohammed said…the blood will flow more and more, and these attacks will seem very small.”

The founder effect was still very much alive in the modern world.

And the use of Mohammed’s techniques of surprise, ambush, and terror worked.

They achieved something we thought only we imperialist Americans went for—regime change. The bombings convinced voters in the Spanish elections that took place three days after the attack to toss out their conservative government and to vote in socialists who promised to give the Moslems more of what they demanded.

The casualties in the worldwide rash of operations like this, military assaults from Moscow to Malaysia, were less than the combined total of deaths in America’s wars in Viet Nam and Iraq. But that will not always be the case. On August 18, 2004, Iranian
Revolutionary Guards intelligence theoretician Hassan Abbassi reportedly taped a speech discussing an Iranian “strategy drawn up for the
destruction of Anglo-Saxon civilization
.” He explained that, “There are 29 sensitive sites in the U.S. and in the West. We have already spied on these sites and we know how we are going to attack them.”

This claim sounds ridiculous. But on September 9, 2004, Iran launched a missile with a range of 1,200 miles—meaning this weapon could reach the more than 200,000 US troops stationed in the Middle East.

It could also reach Russia, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, India, and Israel, a country Iran’s leaders have repeatedly said must be “wiped off the face of the map”.

The world suspected that Iran was developing nuclear warheads for these missiles.
