A left-handed, or morganatic marriage was the union between two people of different rank, usually a ruling prince with a commoner. Although the marriage was binding, neither the spouse nor any children of the marriage had rights of inheritance. It was called a left-handed marriage as during the ceremony the groom held the bride’s left, rather than her right hand.
