I collapsed against his chest. “I don’t want you to go.”

Evan kissed my forehead. “Then say, ‘yes.’ Just say ‘yes.’”

*

I left work that day without giving Evan an answer. I didn’t know what do to, and I flip-flopped back and forth. Evan was the love of my life. What kind of fool wouldn’t marry him? But did I love him enough to give myself to him completely?

I waited on the couch for Samantha to get home. I needed to talk to her, for someone else to put things into perspective. My phone was under a blanket. It dinged and rang constantly. I knew it was Evan trying to get in touch with me. When Samantha walked in, she looked at me with a coy smile.

“Another exciting day?” Samantha asked. “Did Evan whisk you away to Paris? Take you shopping on Fifth Avenue?”

I shook my head, and tears rose to my eyes.

“Honey, what is it?” Samantha asked, rushing to the couch. “Did he break up with you?”

“No, he proposed,” I said.

Samantha sat back, stunned. “Proposed what?”

“Marriage!” I said.

Samantha blinked rapidly, trying to comprehend what was going on. “Then why are you crying?”

“Because, Samantha,” I said. “I didn’t move to this city to be taken in by a man. I can here to find my identity, to start a career. You’re always saying it’s important for women to forge their own way.”

Samantha’s face softened. “Lucy, don’t listen to me. Yes, identity is important, and career is definitely important. But not as important as love.”

I shook my head. “I won’t live my life letting him take care of me.”

“No, that’s not how it works,” Samantha said. “You take care of each other. He needs you as much as you need him. If you find someone to share your life with, to hell with everything else. Happiness is what matters above all things.”

I dried my eyes, sniffling. “But you work so hard. You never talk about love.”

“That doesn’t mean that I don’t want it, that I don’t pray for it every night. If I had the chance, I’d leave behind everything I’ve worked for for the right person.”

But he’s going to spank me,
I thought. But I couldn’t say the words out loud.

“I guess I have a lot to think about,” I said.

“Think about? Lucy, it’s a no-brainer,” Samantha said. “You’re always taking my advice, and this is the best I’ll ever give you. Choose love. Always choose love, no matter what.”

With her words, I felt an overwhelming peace come over me. It was like a gentle nudge from God, and I couldn’t ignore it.
Choose love.
It was so simple, and so true. How could I not choose love?

I gave Samantha a hug, then threw the blanket away, uncovering my phone. I had dozens of texts and missed calls, all from Evan. A shiver went up my spine when I imagined calling him and saying, “Yes, yes I’ll marry you.”

I mouthed the word ‘yes’ as the phone rang. Oddly, Evan didn’t pick up, and I was sent to voicemail. Evan always answered his phone. I scrolled through the texts he’d sent to the last one.

Flight was bumped up to this evening at seven. I need an answer. Please, Lucy.

I dropped the phone and it clattered on the floor. It was already 6:45. Evan must’ve had his phone off because he was onboard, waiting for take off. I looked to Samantha with wild eyes.

“I have to go,” I said. “Now.”

I jumped up from the couch and rushed around the room, gathering my coat and purse.

“What’s the big rush?” Samantha said.

“Evan’s about to go to Asia for a year. I’ve almost missed my chance.”

Samantha’s eyes widened, then she jumped up from the couch and grabbed my shoes. Without bothering to put on shoes herself, Samantha ran down to the street with me. She stood at the curb, waving her arms frantically until a cab pulled over. I didn’t have an address to give the driver, but I knew how to get to Evan’s private airport.

“There’s nothing out there, lady,” the driver said.

“There is. You have to trust me.” I reached into my wallet and pulled out a couple of bills. The cabby took them from me gladly, then drove the way I told him to go.

I couldn’t look at the clock as it ticked closer and closer to seven. Traffic was congested in the city, and we were constantly stopped. I threw another bill at the driver, telling him to hurry. That’s when he kicked things into gear, going down alleyways I didn’t know existed, speeding, and performing maneuvers that I was sure were illegal. Finally, we were freed from the tangle of the city and raced down the open highway. But we only had a few minutes.

I was on the edge of my seat as the runway came into view. Evan’s plane was visible in the distance.

“There, that plane,” I said.

As soon as I said the words, the plane started moving, going faster and faster down the runway. It was about to take off.

“Faster,” I yelled, desperately.

The driver hit the gas so hard, I was thrown back in the seat. We got onto the runway and chased after the plane, but it was hopeless. We couldn’t catch up. The nose of the plane tipped up, and it started its ascension. I wanted to moan and wail and cry, but I just sat there, numb and speechless.

“I’m sorry, ma’am,” the driver said sincerely. “Is your boyfriend on the plane?”

“Yes,” I said. “Please, take me back to my apartment. And there’s no rush.”

I settled back into the seat, my heart aching. God had given me such a beautiful love, and I’d just let it go. I knew I’d never be able to forgive myself.

“Excuse me,” the driver said. “Who’s that guy over there? Do you know him?”

I perked up and looked out of the window. He was standing in the darkness, but I could clearly see that it was Evan. He started walking towards the cab, and my heart leapt.

“Is that him?” the driver asked, excitedly.

“It is,” I said.

The driver turned around to face me. “Then you better go to him.”

I flung the door to the cab open, then ran as fast as I could towards Evan. Evan picked me up and held me in his strong arms. We kissed for a long time, not saying anything.

“You didn’t go,” I said, hugging him tightly.

“No, I didn’t,” Evan said. “I prayed that you’d be here, and God delivered.”

“Then who was on your plane?”

“A few colleagues,” Evan said. “I allowed them to use my plane and go in my place.”

“So you can really stay? You don’t have to go?” I asked.

“That depends,” Evan said. He scooped me up in his arms and kissed me passionately. “Is that a yes?”

“Yes,” I breathed. My body went soft against his as I submitted to his embrace.

Epilogue

Our wedding was an extravagant affair with no expense spared. We married in Evan’s church in the city. It was old and grand with its sweeping ceilings and historic stained glass. At the reception, hundreds of guests were served endless hors d'oeuvres and expensive champagne. The party went on late into the night. When it was over, Josh drove Evan and I to a five star hotel, where we’d spend our wedding night.

I couldn’t quell the nervousness inside of me. My hands trembled and my palms sweated. I was Evan’s now, and my duty was to obey.

In our suite, Evan popped open a bottle of champagne and poured us both a glass.

“A little more, please,” I said, looking at the piddly amount he’d poured me.

“That’s enough for you this evening,” Evan said.

I bit my tongue. As an obedient wife, I knew not to argue with him. We clinked our glasses together, toasting our union. After taking a sip, Evan placed our glasses on the table. He turned to me and took my hands.

“I’ve been waiting for this night for a long time, Lucy,” Evan said.

“Me too,” I whispered.

“Our union has been blessed by God,” Evan said. “And now I’m ready to enjoy my wife, mind and body.”

My stomach fluttered and I took in a ragged breath. I was ready and willing to obey him. Evan looked at me seriously.

“We’re going to start our marriage off right,” Evan said. “I’m going to show you who is in charge. Remove your clothes.”

I swallowed down the questions I had, and obeyed my husband. He watched as I stripped off every article of clothing. He’d never seen me naked before, and my cheeks blushed red as I stood before him, completely bare. Evan looked down, studying my body. He pushed my hair back over my shoulders, then ran his hand down my breasts. My body responded to his touch, producing the warm sensations of desire.

“Lucy,” he said softly. “I’m going to spank you now.” I tensed at his words. “Don’t be afraid,” Evan said. “You’re not being punished, so it won’t be so severe. This is just to give you a taste of what you could be in for if you go against my rules.”

I had no choice but to follow his lead. I nodded, and Evan stepped away from me.

“Bend over the bed,” he said.

I was conscious of how my bare breasts swayed as I walked to the bed. I bent over it, clasping at the comforter. Evan stood beside me, and placed a gentle hand on the small of my back.

“‘Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior,’” Evan recited. “Lucy, do you willingly give yourself to me, body and soul? Do you promise to follow my rules?”

“Yes,” I said on a breath.

Without warning, Evan’s hand came down against my bare bottom. It was harder than I’d expected. I let out a yelp. Ian grabbed my reddening flesh and massaged it, soothing the hot sting.

“I promise to always do right by you, Lucy. I love you more than anything in this world,” Evan said.

I winced when he brought his hand back, and cried out when we struck my bottom once again. This lick was harder than the last. My bottom throbbed.

“If you go against me, your spankings will be much worse than this,” Evan said. He raised his hand and cracked it again against my quivering flesh. “Remember this feeling.”

He hit me again. The force rushed through me, and I struggled to commit this to memory. Evan stroked my bottom, and I began to moan. The spankings had sent plenty of blood rushing down below, and some made its way to the sensitive area between my legs. He spanked me a few more times, gradually getting softer. By the time he was done, I was panting with desire.

I remained leaning over the bed, and heard Evan undressing behind me. He grabbed my shoulders, standing me up, then placed his mouth against my ear.

“I’m going to take you now, which is my privilege as your husband,” he said.

Evan turned me around, and I gazed at his bare body. His arms and torso were lean and toned. I ran my hands over his soft, smooth skin. Glancing down, I saw his cock, hard and thick. It stood out straight from his body.

Evan kissed me passionately, and I could taste the desire on his lips. He ran his hands all over my body, grabbing my breasts and bottom. I pawed at his back, relieved that we could finally be intimate with each other. Evan scooped his hands underneath me and picked me up. I wrapped my legs around his waist. He carried me to the bed and laid me down on my back.

Evan took his time, kissing every inch of my body. We’d fallen in love so quickly, and with so much passion, it had been extremely difficult to keep our hands off of each other. Now, we could enjoy each other’s bodies as husband and wife.

Evan smiled down at me sweetly, and I ran my fingers through his hair. He positioned himself between my legs, and our eyes locked as he pushed his way inside of me. The sensations that shot through me were exhilarating. I opened my mouth wide, moaning loudly towards the ceiling. Evan’s breathing was shallow as he thrust between my legs, filling me with a pleasure I didn’t know existed.

I thought back to that vow I’d taken so long ago, the promise to God and my future husband. Here he was, and here we were. I’d never imagined happiness like this.

I glanced up at Evan. He was no longer looking at the sunset, but at me.

“The sky is beautiful, see,” I said, trying to draw his attention to the clouds bathed in golden light.

“I’d rather look at you,” Evan said, stroking my cheek.

I smiled shyly, rising up on my elbow. “You can look at me all the time. I’m yours now, your wife. You won’t always be able to see this.”

He tickled my sides, and I giggled into his arms. “I’d still rather look at you,” he said. His expression softened, and he stroked my cheek with his thumb. “I quite like having you as my wife.”

“Oh, really,” I said, teasingly. “And why’s that?”

“Because I can do this.” Evan stroked my bottom lip with his thumb. I opened my mouth, tasting the salty seawater on his skin. “And this.” With a mischievous smile, he reached behind my neck and untied the knot that held my bikini in place. I giggled as the straps fell down my chest. I clasped my breasts, covering them as the fabric slipped away. Evan took my hands and pulled them away.
