“Right now, we need a shower. Together.”
After a passion
filled burning shower, Derreck and Macy retreated to the bed. They rested together, Macy’s head on his shoulder, never wanting the moment to end. The silence that fell felt strange at first but soon became welcomed. Macy couldn’t remember a time in her life when she felt so protected and so calm.
That was until Derreck started to speak.
“Are you and Stacey close?”
“Stacey C.? Why?”
“I’m asking a question.”
“We were close. Now? I don’t know...”
“If you quit there, would she hold it against you?”
“Depends on the reason.”
“You’re screwed,” Derreck said and laughed.
“Me? Why?”
“You’re quitting.”
“My job?”
“Yeah. It’s done. Call Stacey C. and tell her to find another person.”
“I can’t quit. I need the money. It’s... my job.”
“You have a new job,” Derreck said, “with me.”
Macy sat up, shaking her head. “No. I’m not going to let someone...”
“Stop it,” Derreck said. “I made a decision today. I’ve been interviewing people for a week and nobody is good enough for my company. This project upstate is big and will lead to a lot more work. I can run my company from anywhere in the world and that’s what I’m going to do.”
“Okay. I still don’t understand.”
“Macy, you’re a painter. An artist. You need to paint. You need to. I’m building a lot of property up there and I need someone to fill it with art.”
“Art?”
“The halls. The foyers. All that decorating crap. I normally pay someone to just figure it all out, but now I have someone I trust. I’m hiring you, Macy, to come with me. We’re going upstate and you’re going to paint every single day until I approve the artwork for my properties.”
“Derreck, I can’t do this...”
“Are you going to hide?” His voice was deep, commanding. “Are you going to go back and paint in a closet? Are you going to run someone else’s paintings around the city?”
Macy closed her eyes and shook her head. She could feel her scars burning. All the memories trying to come alive, trying to chain her, hold her down. When she opened her eyes she looked into Derreck’s eyes. He wasn’t all that different. He had scars too. He had memories. And he overcame it all.
To live.
To love.
To want Macy.
To need Macy.
“I’ll go with you,” Macy whispered.
Derreck touched Macy’s cheek. “I didn’t ask you.” He smiled. “I told you. We leave tomorrow. Together.”
Macy nodded and leaned in, meeting Derreck for a kiss. His hand touched her body, following the lines of her sultry curves. When he came close to her scars she didn’t shudder. Instead, she placed her hand to his back, clawing at it.
