“Well?” someone asked. “Is it?”

“Sticky?” Sara asked.

The woman nodded.

Sara laughed. “No, it’s not. And it smells good.”

“Does it really taste like cotton candy?” someone else asked.

“Yep.” Sara held her hand out, palm down. “Want to see?” The woman’s eyes widened. “You want me to taste it?” She sounded shocked.

Sara shrugged. “Only if you want to. Doesn’t matter to me.” The woman didn’t decline the invitation immediately. She just sat looking at Sara.

“What book said you should do that?” Kathy, with her freshly painted toenails, asked.

Sara reached down and dug out the book in her bag. “I have a bunch. This one is called
Sex All Day
Long
.”

“Is it like an instruction manual or something?”

“No. It’s more about relationships, honestly. I do have a couple books that are more instructional.” Sara dug in her bag again and pulled out a smaller paperback. “And I have a few erotic romances. They’re fiction, but they’re steamy and have some good ideas.”

No one said a word.

“There are a lot of electronic erotic romance books too,” she went on, determined to not be intimidated by the long silences. “You can read them online.” None of the women would look at each other. A few seemed to be making a mental note.

Sara wasn’t embarrassed by any of it. If these women believed she wasn’t, or shouldn’t be having sex, they were crazy. If they weren’t having fun, steamy sex, they should be. And if it bothered them to think about Jason MacDonald Gordon having sex, they sure didn’t know him as well as they thought.

The woman next to her was staring at the paperback in Sara’s lap.

“I’ll bring the powder in tomorrow and you can all try it.” No one declined the invitation, no one shouted
No!
and a few smiled.

“I’d better get going,” she announced, standing and sliding her feet back into her flip-flops. “It was fun, girls.”

“Bye, Sara.”

“See ya, Sara.”

“Thanks, Sara.”

Sara was sure she was beaming. They weren’t exactly friends yet, but at least she’d given them something to talk about again.

As she bent to tuck one book and the manicure-pedicure paraphernalia in her purse she surreptitiously slipped the romance novel to the woman who’d been sitting next to her.

Mac didn’t make it home around noon, or even close to noon, the next day. He still wasn’t home by the time Sara needed to leave for the football game, and she was ticked. She was sure he was avoiding coming home because he was avoiding her. She didn’t completely understand everything behind that, but she did know he was still feeling bad about wanting Sam’s little sister. She had to think Sam and Mac had talked about it over the past few days working together. She was also pretty sure nothing had been resolved. At least not her way. Otherwise, Mac would have come home as soon as his shift ended to be with her.

Sara called up the road to Sean’s house. As a member of the team, Sean was already in town but his mother was happy to offer Sara a ride to the game, so Sara found herself tucked between Sean’s mother and grandmother in the stands by the time everyone stood for the national anthem.

“Everybody’s making a huge deal out of a simple scrimmage, aren’t they?” Sara asked as they settled back in their seats.

Sean’s mom, Pat, laughed. “There’s nothing simple about it. Once boys in this town put their helmets on they play to win no matter who’s on the other side of the line.”

Sara could see that. It seemed like a real game to her. Everyone was dressed in school colors, the cheerleaders and band were there and the players were running and hitting hard.

It wasn’t until the Riverside Panthers’ varsity team led by seven and a time-out was called by the visiting team that Sara noticed Mac.

He was standing down behind the team talking with the other men who had gathered there. It seemed the women and other students used the bleachers, while the men—mostly dads, she was sure—congregated along the sidelines. They were separated from the team by a long rope and about thirty feet of dirt and grass, but they were there, watching and analyzing and discussing every play.

Mac also was dressed in the school colors, including a pullover and a cap, and he definitely seemed to be a part of the group.

Sara frowned at his back.

“Was there anything going on in town this afternoon before the game?” she asked Pat, not taking her eyes off of Mac.

“Oh, of course. They had a pep rally at school and then the big tailgate party in the parking lot.”

“Why weren’t you there?” Sara asked.

“I was, at the start. I helped serve for the first shift, then had to run home to get stuff for the after-party.”

“There’s an after-party too?”

“Football is what everyone lives for here,” Pat said with a laugh. “We celebrate all season and then when it’s over, we talk about it and anticipate the next season.”

“Wow.” Sara made a mental note to buy a copy of Football for Dummies or something the next time she was in Omaha.

“You didn’t happen to see Jason down there at the tailgate?”

“Of course,” Pat said. “I’m sure he was at the pep rally too.”

“Uh-huh.”

Sara excused herself and headed for the restroom. Fine. Her husband went to the school pep rally instead of coming home. Even though he’d been gone and hadn’t seen her for forty-eight hours now. Even though the last time he’d seen her she’d been naked and willing with a box full of sex toys. Fine.

She emerged from the ladies’ room and headed for the concession stand. If she wasn’t going to see her husband and she was going to watch a game she barely understood, she was going to need chocolate.

As she stood in line behind a dad and a little girl who couldn’t decide which flavor sucker she wanted, she heard a deep, very familiar voice say, “I wonder if they have cotton candy. I’m in the mood.” She whirled to find herself nose to chest with Mac and tipped her head back to look up at him. “How did you know I had that on?”

“I heard you were wearing it all day since you’ve discovered it doesn’t get sticky and that you were interested in sex all day long.”

She rolled her eyes. Even the title of her book had made it to his ears. “Who’d you hear that from?”

“Tim Stratton.”

“Who’s Tim Stratton?”

“Cindy Stratton’s husband.”

“Who’s Cindy Stratton?”

“The woman you asked to lick you to see how your powder tastes.” She looked at the smile he gave her and raised an eyebrow. “That’s not how I said it.” At all. For one thing, the way Mac said it made it sound very sexual.

She turned back to the concession stand and ordered a Snickers bar and a bag of M&Ms. She didn’t eat junk food very often but when she did it was chocolate. If she ever needed a sugar high, it was now.

“I want to lick you and see how your powder tastes,” he said near her ear.

She headed for the bleachers, ripping the top off the bag of M&Ms. “I’m not sure I’m talking to you.”

“Oh?” He fell into step beside her.

“You left things a little unfinished the other day.”

“I heard you—very distinctly—finish, princess.”

“I mean that
you
didn’t finish things.”

“You won’t stay mad at me.”

“Oh? And what if I don’t forgive you? You going to threaten to never do any of that again?”

“I would never threaten that. Because that would be completely untrue. I fully intend to do all of that again. And again. And again. No matter if you think you’re holding a grudge or not.” He caught her arm after a few steps and pulled her behind the concession building. He backed her up against the wall, pressed close, lifted her hair away from her neck with one big hand and leaned in to run his tongue from her collarbone to behind her ear.

She shivered in spite of herself. She tipped her head to the side too. “You shouldn’t get to taste it now.

You should have come home, instead of going to the pep rally, to taste it.”

“Have to support my team,” he said gruffly, tracing the wet path again.

“You didn’t think I’d be here tonight, did you?”

“No. I’d hoped you wouldn’t.”

“Because…”

“Because just seeing you makes me want to lick you. All over. Right here and now.” Her blood heated with his words and the look in his eyes. “Why is that such a problem?”

“Because I shouldn’t lick you. And I especially shouldn’t lick you here in a public place where everyone thinks I’m a saint.”

She sighed with pleasure. She loved having his hands and mouth on her. “They don’t know you very well, do they?”

“They know me very well.” His tongue traced around the outer shell of her ear.

“They don’t know how cruel you are, withholding sex from your own wife,” she said in a husky whisper.

“Not having sex with my best friend’s little sister makes me a saint.” He trailed his lips along her jaw.

“How so?”

“Do you have any idea how difficult that’s been for me?” He kissed her, just once, softly.

“I hope it has been,” she admitted. “It’s been torture for me.”

“Maybe I can help with that.”

“Great, let’s go.” She didn’t want to move, though. They were in a shadow here. The game went on, the crowd cheered, the band played, people came and went from the concession stand. They were hidden from it all. Someone could come around the corner at any moment and see them. The idea gave her a naughty thrill.

“Right here,” he said against her lips. Then he kissed her with the heat and need that she felt herself.

“But…” She had to catch her breath. Her hands held the front of his nylon pullover in two tight fists.

“This is a high school. With kids. And PTO moms. And…”

“Yep.”

She kissed him this time, arching against him as best she could with their height differences. He helped her out with that when he cupped her butt and lifted her up against the wall and pressed in. She licked along his bottom lip, reveled in his groan, then stroked her tongue boldly against his. His fingers dug into her bottom and she wiggled against him, wanting to press skin to skin, to open to him, to pull him inside of her.

She’d had very plain and boring sex, but she knew there was more to it. If she hadn’t, the Internet would have taught her quickly.

“Mac, I need you.”

“I know you do, princess,” he said gruffly. “I know exactly what you need. But I need just a little bit first. Just a taste.”

With that he pulled her shirt up, the left cup of her bra down and sucked her cotton-candy-flavored nipple into his mouth.

He sucked and she gasped, then groaned. If he asked her to strip naked right here and now she’d do it and all she’d say would be thank you.

“That does taste as good as it smells,” he reported. He took a bold swipe with his tongue across the skin on the upper curve of her breast. Then pulled back to look at her.

Chapter Nine

In the shadow of the building he couldn’t see clearly. He looked his fill anyway. She was so damned beautiful.

He’d known she was there in the stands, but with Sean’s mom and grandma she’d been safe, off-limits, untouchable. When he’d looked back to see her climbing down from the bleachers and heading off by herself, he’d sworn under his breath. He knew he had to go after her. He couldn’t stay away. It was like an addiction.

“Mac,” she whispered. “Do something.”

“You want me just to take you up against the brick wall?” he teased.

When she nodded, he almost went to his knees. She’d let him. Like this. Where nearly anyone could find them. Unromantic, spontaneous, out of control. And she’d let him. From the look on her face, she’d like it too.

She was wearing jeans. He’d meant for that to be
less
appealing, to cover her up. Instead, she looked incredible. The blue denim showcased her small waist, her firm butt, and her slim legs. She wore it like she wore everything—with an easy style that made him want to howl with lust.

“Let’s go home.”

He wanted to. He really did. “It’s only halftime. And I probably should warn you…”

“Princess Sara!” Dooley had her in a hug before Mac could finish his sentence.

“Dooley!” Sara squealed as her feet left the ground. “What are you doing here?”

“We came up to hang out with you. We miss you.” Kevin moved in to hug her next.

Dooley stood back and watched. “You do smell like candy.” She turned a huge grin on him. “You sound like you expected it.”

“Well, Steve told me you told his wife you’re wearing some kind of special body powder.” She looked at Mac. “Steve is a friend of Tim’s?”

“Yeah. I think Alan told Steve.”

“Does everyone know?”

“That the hot girl married to the town’s favorite son announced at the Style that she is wearing edible body powder from an online sex shop? Yeah. Everyone knows.” She rolled her eyes. “What else are they saying about me?”

“That you’re loaning out books about relationships and sex,” Mac said.

“That you’re not pregnant,” Dooley added.

“And that you give great pedicures,” Kevin said.

You’ve
been talking to the locals?”

“Of course. We’ve been partying with them all afternoon.”

“You’ve been here all day?”

“Yeah, we came up with Mac right after our shift.”

She turned to Mac, eyebrows up. “Had to bring bodyguards?” He grinned. Kind of. “They come up here with me most Fridays.” Sara frowned and turned back to Kevin. Kevin was the one that wouldn’t lie to her, even to spare her feelings. “What? You come to Oscar a lot?”

Kevin shrugged. “Yeah. They have lots of games and parties and stuff.”

“And nice Christian girls you can pray with?” Sara asked slyly.

Kevin blushed. “Well…”
