“It’s okay,” Adam whispered, wiping away one of her falling tears.
A surge of energy traveled from Arson’s chest to his hands, and heat spawned from his palms but was contained. He glanced at Adam, noticed his movements, then calmly directed his words toward Emery. “Don’t be afraid.”
“It’s just the end of the world, right?” She swiped her red eyes. “What can we do now?”
She waited, staring at Arson, glaring right into his soul. He didn’t have words. He didn’t have knowledge of the future. Didn’t have hope. Didn’t know if God had even heard her hushed prayer, but at the root of him, he wanted to believe, more than anything.
“What can we do!” she said, the tears coming back.
Adam pulled Emery close and held her tightly. “Adapt.” He shot Arson a slanted glance. When he did, Arson noticed something under his skin move. Microscopic legs slightly protruded from beneath Adam’s bulging cheekbones. As soon as he noticed, the movement stopped and Adam dropped to his knees and hugged his sides. Bloodshot eyes and a gaping, twisted jaw echoed his answer to the future’s dark agenda a second time: Adapt. It was the only choice. The only way.
No amount of shaking could make the parasite stop its frenetic journey upward, toward Adam’s brain. “It’s crawling in my head.”
Lana reached for her brother’s hand, but he swung his fist, and in doing that, she was thrust onto her backside.
“They…want my mind. Get it out! They want to control…my mind!” His agonizing screams seemed to make the room tremble.
In a blink, Emery collapsed as the room became a blur.
And then Arson felt it too.
